15 is a bit old to be in 8th Grade. Not if one flunks a few grades
I went to school with a guy who flunked so many times that he drove to school in 8th grade and was able to to drink legally in high school

I had a guy like that in 9th grade (it was still a junior high until 10th grade). In High School we had a senior who was old enough to drink.
