USS RONALD REAGAN, At sea (NNS) -- Sailors from USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), civilian mariners from USNS Rainier (T-AOE 7) and the pilots and aircrew of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 4 helped rescue a man who suffered from chest pains while aboard a civilian fishing vessel in the middle of the Pacific Ocean Jan 9.

The victim, described only as a 35-year old Filipino male, had been suffering from chest pains while aboard the 85-foot fishing vessel Princess Jasmine. The vessel, along with its seven crew members, was located approximately 815 nautical miles northeast of Oahu, Hawaii, when they issued the distress call late Sunday evening.

Under the direction of 3rd Fleet and Rear Adm. Michael H. Miller, Ronald Reagan Strike Group Commander, Rainier responded to the vicinity and used a small boat to transfer the victim from the civilian vessel to Rainier’s onboard medical facility.

Reagan also responded to the call for help, because it was the closest vessel with a hospital and the ability to transport patients to shore facilities with aircraft. Two HH-60H helicopters from HS-4 were dispatched from Reagan at approximately 10 a.m. Jan. 9, to transport the patient from Rainier to Reagan for medical treatment.

“The patient was still having chest pains upon arrival, but was in otherwise good health with stable vital signs,” said Cmdr. John Burgess, Reagan’s Senior Medical Officer.

“We were able to make the patient pain free, and he has been resting comfortably aboard Ronald Reagan since his arrival,” said Burgess.

According to Burgess, this incident gave his doctors and corpsmen the opportunity to use emergency procedures for suspected heart attacks that are not normal for a Navy ship with a young crew that is in good health.

“This event shows that the Ronald Reagan Strike Group is well prepared for our upcoming deployment, and that we have the flexibility to respond to whatever need or emergency arises,” said Miller.

Capt. Terry B. Kraft, Reagan’s Commanding Officer, said he was glad the crew was able to assist someone in need and provide life-saving medical treatment.

“This rescue highlights the flexible nature of deployed naval forces. I was happy we were able to help over such a long initial distance,” said Kraft.

Reagan is currently underway on her maiden deployment in support of the global war on terrorism and maritime security operations.
