Texas State Teachers Association throws support behind Strayhorn BY JOHN REYNOLDS AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Republican turned Independent gubernatorial candidate Carole Keeton Strayhorn picked up the endorsement of the Texas State Teachers Association on Tuesday.
The group, however, won't be able to help Strayhorn collect the 45,000-plus signatures that she will need to get on the ballot for the November general election.
The TSTA is encouraging all of its members to take part in the party primaries, spokesman Richard Kouri said.
Because of several high-profile legislative races, "we certainly believe our members should be involved," he said.
Strayhorn, currently the state's comptroller, had been mulling a challenge to Gov. Rick Perry in the March 7 Republican primary but decided soon before the Jan. 2 filing deadline to stage an independent campaign.
After the party primaries, she must pick up 45,540 signatures from registered voters who did not vote in the primaries in order to be listed on the November ballot.
Humorist Kinky Friedman is also trying to make the ballot as an independent candidate.
No independent candidate has won a race for governor since Sam Houston in 1859.
Strayhorn is a former Austin schoolteacher and school board member.
Even without educators' signatures, "we are very confident (Strayhorn) will get the necessary signatures," Kouri said.
Lubbock teacher and TSTA regional vice president Russell Teeter said Strayhorn "has been a long time public school supporter. She is electable."
TSTA polls indicate that Strayhorn can draw votes from Perry in November, Teeter said.

she is killing the Democrats and ensuring Perry's reelection! One Mad Grandma!
Typical.
That means my decision comes down to Perry or Friedman.
Immigrants, legal or otherwise, come to Texas to "put a roof over their heads" and Texas has a responsibility to provide them education and health care once they are here, Republican gubernatorial candidate Carole Keeton Strayhorn told a conservative GOP group today.I ain't votin' fer her.
Friedman is the Willie Nelson candidate, I believe.
She is campaigning in Democrat areas, and as this shows, drawing support from democrat constituencies. If she and Kinky are on the ballot, they will pull heavily from the democrat candidate. (Before she announced as an independent, she tried to get at least one of the Democrats to bail out of the governor's race.) It wouldn't shock me to see Republicans help her gather signatures.
I can easily see Perry getting 45% or more.
I don't know all of Strayhorn's positions on the issues, was going to check that out today. If Kinky wants a shot at my vote, he needs to get serious about the campaign and let us know where he stands on the issues...gun rights and abortion are not issues to joke about. He has admitted that he is pro-gay marriage, but that issue was settled by the Texas voters awhile back, so he can do no harm there.
She's a Republican-turned-Independent. She's also WH Press Secretary Scot McClellan's mother.
I actually kinda of feel sorry for you Teddy.
Trying to mask your liberalism as being conservative, it ain't going to work for your master hillary, and it ain't going to work for you.
