AI to buy 68 Boeings, signs deal

January 11, 2006 15:35 IST

India's flagship carrier Air India on Wednesday signed a landmark agreement with the American aerospace giant Boeing Commercial Airplane for the purchase of 68 aircraft at an estimated cost of Rs 35,000 crore (Rs 350 billion).

The agreement was signed between Air India chairman V Thulasidas and Boeing Commercial Airplane president and CEO Alan Mulally at the Air India office in south Mumbai.

Air India's order consists of 23 Boeing 777s and 27 Boeing 787-800 dream liners, AI sources said.

Air India Express, a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India will receive 18 Boeing 737-800s, it added.

The move follows the decision of empowered group of ministers to clear the Air India's proposal of aircraft purchase, the largest ever by an Indian carrier, after securing a financial discount of about Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 10 billion).

"Is anybody buying Airbus these days?"

If we wait long enough, a few of us could probably chip in a few bucks each and get an A-380 cheap!

The headline should read, "Air Bust offers massive bribes, subsidies, and kick backs, but Air India buys the better aircraft from Boeing." :)

Greyhound is looking at a wingless version of the A380.

"...estimated cost of Rs 35,000 crore (Rs 350 billion)."

Boeing gave Air India less than a 3% discount, it appears.

That ain't bad - sell nearly US $12 billion of stuff at almost list price.

God bless Boeing. No wonder the US economy is buzzing. Building all these airplanes affects the economy as a whole.

Actually, i sent a letter to our local congressman about this issue. Our politicians never learn from the history. Supplying our AF with foreign aircraft is one way to embargo in the near future and in my opinion, treason.

It has ben my opinion from the beginning that the decision was made to include Airbus in negotiations to drive down Boeing's price. I think this is a smart business decision . . . as long as they end up buying Boeing.

All the folks that say outsourcing is bad for the U.S economy need to think this through. The investment boom in India has created the cash flow for them to be able to afford aircraft so the money did come back. Indians buy several other U.S. made products in the entertainment, computer hardware and technology industries which support jobs here. This is proof positive that globalization and outsurcing is good for the economy as a whole. Some individuals do get adversely impacted, they just need to adapt to the new growing industries and they too can thrive. Creative destruction has been a major factor in U.S. prosperity and this is great news indeed for the the U.s economy.

Dear Maneesh,

You mean... as several hundred million Indians join the First World middle class, they'll... buy more stuff??

And more stuff will have to be... produced??

Resulting overall in greater production, worldwide, of goods and services??

Who'd a' thunk it?!?
