Great Britain: Now pubs ban trilbies (Pub chain bans HATS because they obscure faces on CCTV cams)

A PUB chain has barred elderly gents from wearing their trilby hats — as part of the war on HOODIES.

Brewer Greene King claims the brims hide wearers’ faces from CCTV cameras at its 800 premises.

Staff are under orders to treat punters with trilbies the same as hoodie yobs — and deny service to those who refuse to remove them.

Great-grandad Colin Osborne, 64, blew his top when a barmaid ordered him to take off his trilby at The Monument pub in Hereford.

He complained to the manager, who told him it was policy in all Greene King pubs.

Local newspaper editor Colin, of All Stretton, Shropshire, said: “I’ve worn a trilby for 20 years. I’m hardly likely to be fighting on CCTV.

“If someone in a hoodie misbehaves, they should be punished — not everybody who wears a hat.”

Colin, who had popped for a drink with his son Mark, 40, said: “I took off my trilby to keep the peace. But I should be able to wear it when and where I choose.”

Nigel Denford, editor of Hat Magazine, branded the ban “ridiculous”.

Greene King insisted: “Hats of any kind obscure the faces of customers from the cameras. To remain consistent and fair, we ask all customers to observe the policy.”

The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live -- did live, from habit that became instinct -- in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.

In addition to scarves, how about ladies' hats?  Last time I checked, some of them can be quite sizable.

It appears that this pub chain is not interested in any business from our President or from the millions of Americans who opt for traditional American headwear.  Making the assumption that everyone is a criminal and requiring them to submit to closed-circuit scrutiny is of course their right as a business to do (however wrongheaded it may be) but it's also our right to reject their approach and to instead send our business elsewhere if we choose.

This endless Big Brotheresque encroachment upon a person's privacy is something that needs to be stood up to and bitch-slapped back down into the Socialist hellhole from whence it came.

Why not ban ALL clothing? They could be concealing identifying scars, tattoos, etc.

I'd ban him for wearing a pink shirt with a yellow tie.

Although your suggestion has quite an appeal in some regards

It also has some extremely negative implications

I'm all for America in most cases, but the Brits have way cooler slang than we do.

I think that there's a law stipulating that you can only wear those things if you are over sixty.

Agreed, I love British slang, which is one of the many reasons why I enjoy reading the Sun....they take every possible opportunity to use Cockney Rhyming Slang and other slang forms whenever possible, making their articles a real treat to read.

FReepers interested in learning more about British Slang in it's various forms might like to start out at these sites:

BBC America - Dictionary

Dictionary of English slang and colloquialisms of the UK

Be advised that slang, by it's nature, will include a large number of bawdy and rude words not appropriate for polite conversation and so care and caution is urged   :-)

Although I would prefer any punishment as approved and meted out by the legendary Miss Welch, please be reminded that I didn't enlarge any of the other pics beyond what was absolutely necessary to make my point, and I didn't include Helen Thomas.  Hopefully that will have a bit of a mitigating effect.....

Maybe, but it's really hard on the eyes!

Agreed.  I believe that it's a popular color combo for late-night pub 'punters' because it helps drivers to see them as they meander back home down the country lane   :-)
