"The crew of the trawler, in Lamai Bay, were allegedly drinking heavily and watching pornographic DVDs when one of the pair announced: "I want to rape someone"."
You don't usually hear that from people watching "The Sound of Music".
(I'll bet that if convicted, they don't spend 15 years on death row.)
I'll take that bet. I bet they die pretty quickly whether they're guilty or not. If they are guilty, it would be justice. The Thais don't want anyone messing around with their cash cow tourist industry.
I like his thinking.
The report says one of the guys is from N.E. Thailand, so not very likely. The muslims in Thailand are almost all in the far South, near the Malaysia border.
For the same reason if someone can afford Lexus instead buying Ford. Pure stupidity.
Three things.
(1). I said you would eventually get up and eat something, not necessarily a cheeseburger.
(2). I said "if you are hungry" while watching.
(3). Viewing something that appeals to human desires or needs on T.V. does indeed open up the lusts and cravings in human minds. This has been proven by studies beyond the shadow of any doubt. This is precisely why corporations pay billions upon billions of dollars to advertise and promote their products on T.V. IT WORKS.
In the North, where we live, there are gangs of young men who deal in drugs, ride around on motorcycles armed with samurai swords. the are normally only a problem to each other and the police but single young women or young couples stay out of the part of town in which the "entertainment venues" the druggies frequent. The Thai war on drugs, where ti police shot all the dealers they could find, knocked the samurai gangs down to a small group.
These rapists on Koh Samui sound like the gangsters in other parts of the country. Ubon and the Northeast had a big problem with gangs before they shootings in the War on Drugs. Many of the gangsters scattered and went into hiding. These guys are the right age to have gone into hiding. Just my thought.
Thailand will now show our lawyer-braggarts who claim to run "the world's finest judicial system" how real justice works.
BTW, I don't know if it's mentioned on the thread but the victim's mother in the UK heard her daughter's screams via that telephone conversation.
Unlikely, as Thailand is only 4.6% Muslim, and this predominantly in the South, whereas this guy came from the North.
Bualoi, from Ubon Ratchathani, in north-east Thailand...
I would not assume so. Most Thais are not, and there is plenty of crime among the non-Muslim majority there. This crime does not necessarily carry any specific ROP indicators, so far as I've seen. People can be heartless, cruel, selfish, and/or racist without being Muslim.
I don't think the story really indicates much one way or another. But the perps did seek their victim on a beach where, at that time, any woman they found would more likely be "farang" than Thai. I expect they knew this.
bump
Yeah, because nothing like this ever happens in the US, Australia or other developed nations. /sarcasm
It doesn't matter where you are- she is not to blame.
Any time someone says something like 'I don't blame the victim but...' It usually says to me that they do in fact blame the victim. During the days after 9/11 we heard much of this type thing. 'I ain't saying the US deserved this but...' I heard it many times. It wasn't right then and it isn't right here.
Well, I can't say anything that would enlighten your imagination. I can only say that I am one of those people that likes going to Third World armpits. When I came back from Africa I was depressed at how ordered and rigid life seemed in the developed world.
Another note too- at one time the land mass that is now the US was a third world underdeveloped arm-pit and yet people went to it by the boat load. At one time the American West was ruled by savages and was a harsh place to live. Now it is tamed. It didn't get that way all by itself.
There will always be 'Sit At Home' types and 'Adventurous Types' who are willing to go to bad places for whatever reason. Probably pretty hard for the former to understand the latter but as for me, the world's a better place for the adventurous ones.
Well, I don't have a nice reef in my tub or bronzed babes walking around in thongs in my bathroom so I'll just keep hitting the beach ;-)
I wonder (not) if Mike Farrell is on the next plane to Thailand. There's got to be some dimwit in Hollywood to plead for mercy.
If the 2 are guilty, I have no problems with sending them to the firing squad. But the description of Thai legal system leaves me to wonder if they might be scapegoats to make the police look good, and to help save tourist dollars?
