Thailand can be fairly rough. Not as bad as Malaysia or Indonesia, but still pretty bad, once you get away from the tourist traps. I put it on the same level as Mexico.

As one who has also been to 3rd world Asia - you better be very aware of your surroundings. If you watch travel TV shows or the reality game type shows one would think the 3rd world is safe for young 1st world women and men.
Too many of our young are so so ignorant of the brutal world so many of the poor in the 3rd world live in..this young lady paid the price of an exotic vacation. I hope it was worth it.

Oh, no, Samui's pretty nice, actually. I'd compare it to Phuket and to the old Pattaya (the new one's a little rough IMHO). I don't think she could reasonably be expected to anticipate two thugs swimming ashore with an intent to rape and kill somebody.

Contrasted with Thailand is Viet Nam. A woman is a lot safer travelling alone in Viet Nam than she would be in Massachussetts or Washington. I had no qualms about urging that my daughter go to VN when she was expressing a desire to visit somewhere overseas. Excepted is downtown Sai Gon which shares certain characteristics with other big cities everywhere.

The victim put herself in a dangerous position. Consider the reputation of Thai fishermen. They were the pirates that killed and raped and plundered so many of the escaping Boat People not so very long ago. Where she was, fishermen and boats were surely evident. That is not to "blame" her for her fate. If there have been no incidents then people don't worry, especially on a pleasant beach.

Try watching juicy cheeseburger commercials for an hour next time you're hungry, my guess is that you'll probably get up and eat something afterwards. I think it's insane to even debate whether or not watching pornographic films stirs up the lusts in men. Of course it does, and if those indulging in this filth happen to be drunk there is no doubt that both of these evils contributed in one degree or another to the rape of this poor girl.

same could be said for Berlin under hitler - even Bagdad under Saddam. Short of brutal dictatorships few 3rd world Asia countries are safe for any 1st world tourists who just wanders in.
as a Nam vet myself 69-71 `101st I corps. I am sure the Vietnamese will do well if let alone by the communist thugs- they are hard working and very smart much in the mold of successful Asian immigrants to USA. Those 1st generation Vietnamese I have worked with are a tribute to the brave Vietnamese people who fought with US against the thugs from Hanoi.
