Report: Egypt threatens Abbas

Egypt threatened to withdraw its support for the Palestinian Authority if the PA did not act to control the rampant anarchy in the Gaza Strip, according to a report in the London Arab newspaper Al Quds.

The report claimed that following the incident at the Rafah border crossing in which two Egyptian soldiers were killed, Egyptian authorities delivered the threat to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas as part of a specially delivered message.

Egypt also threatened to withdraw its support for the peace process if the PA did not take the proper steps to restore order to Gaza.

Israel Radio reported that there were no other confirmations of the account.

In the incident at the border crossing last Wednesday, two Egyptian border guards were killed and at least 30 were wounded when scores of Fatah gunmen opened fire at Egyptian army posts. They first demolished parts of the concrete slabs along the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, enabling many Palestinians to cross into Egypt.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen used a bulldozer and explosives to create a hole in the wall. Egyptian border guards and Palestinian Authority policemen fired into the air in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent Palestinians from infiltrating into Egypt, they added.

The gunmen were protesting the arrest of one of their colleagues by the PA security forces on charges of kidnapping three British nationals.

A few comments:

If the Egyptians decide to "create order" be sure there won't be any targeted killings.

(Remember this: The Cairo massacre)

PLO/PA etc never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

The Palestinian people are a mixture of egyptian and jordanian refugee's that thier respective homelands didn't want for whatever reason. Sounds like the Egyptians still don't want anything to do with them. Can you blame them? Not!

Those poor oppressed Pali's. The West is so mean to them; oops, it seems the locals aren't too happy either!

Eventually, Gaza will be re-absorbed by Egypt.

Sharon was derided for turning over Gaza to the Palis. Perhaps it was a stroke of genius on his part to make Gaza the Egyptian's problem instead of the Israeli's.

Corrected and extended:
I wonder what Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte do whatever they do instead of thinking about hundreds of black Sudanese butchered by Egyptian police and hundreds of thousands of black Sudanese... Ah, whatever.

I thought when it occurred that this killing of the Egyptians was very big news with ramifications. I put the news up as "Breaking news".

Others didn't share my view at the time.

It was idiocy. Pure and simple.

Having lawlessness next door is crazy.

Egypt will do what Arabs always do, channel the hostility back towards Israel.

You are wrongly assuming Harry and Danny can think at all.

I thought I redeemed myself. See #13 above. Although, I must admit, the oroginal sin was BAD.

>>>Perhaps it was a stroke of genius on his part to make Gaza the Egyptian's problem instead of the Israeli's.<<<

Sometimes the law of unintended consequences works beautifully....if the net result is Palestinian/Egyptian violence, fine and perhaps a fitting last act of a heroic figure in Israeli history - the warrior/peacemaker Sharon.

There is little love in the Arab world for the Palestinians. As long as Egypt and the Palestinians are pre-occupied with each other, Israel benefits.

Well there's the problem right there, they should have fired at the border crossers instead of into the air. What are they stupid???

Hmmm. Is Egypt worried that if the PA loses Gaza to Hamas, the Brotherhood may be able to establish a base there???
