Survey: Latinos Have Sharp Internal Differences Over Immigration

Hispanic residents of the United States are sharply divided over what to do about the influx of undocumented immigrants, an issue that is shaping up as a key one prior to November's mid-term elections, a new survey shows.

"Hispanic registered voters are strongly supporting initiatives to reform immigration while penalizing illegal behavior," said the head of the non-profit Latino Coaliton, Robert Deposada, at a press conference where he discussed the results of the 2005 National Latino Survey released on Thursday.

Who would have thought??? Not all Hispanics support illegal immigration, despite what the media tells us.

I'm not Hispanic, but I am legally immigrating to the U.S. You have no idea how livid us legal immigrants are about illegal immigration. We follow the law, pay a small fortune in legal fees, go through background checks and health exams and have to wait years for the process to complete. These people are line jumpers of the worst sort and UCSIS is more agressive with legals because it takes less work to find an administrative error that can cause deportation, all in the name of trying to look tough on immigration. Then they turn a blind eye to the illegal situation.

If Bush was smart, he would see that legal immigrants, who have become citizens and vote, will not support any amnesty plan. He will not get votes for pandering to the illegal immigrant crowd. They can't vote, and legal immigrant who can are against it. Let the 'immigrant rights' advocates scream all they want - they represent a non-voting constituency.

The ones who are already here legally have no more support for illegals competing for their jobs than the rest of us

I have always wondered what the 2nd, 3rd (and more) generations of hispanic Americans thought about the flood. Seems like it does incredible damage to their hard work and patriotism.

Yeppers...make sure to tie the word HISPANIC with illegal alien invaders as if they have anything in common...

You are either an American or not and that is where your loyalty should be...

I lived a few years in west Texas and got to know many multi-generation Hispanics and they are very opposed to amnesty. They talk about illegals with much contempt and are very supportive of tougher laws and a fence.

Canada - very happy to be leaving the Socialist paradies and moving to the U.S. I'm becoming more and more anti-Canadian in the recent years. I lost relatives because of socialized medicine there. According to friends and family there, I'm to the right of Darth Vader. It's a compliment because they think Bush is to the right of Vader, too.

Try those of us who 10th generation or more, heh. The first of my ancestors came here in the 1500s although they really didn't settle here until a few generations after that (for good reason - a lot of instability initially).

I've attended a few historical/genealogy conferences concerning Spanish ancestry, and I actually had somebody get worked up criticize my ancestors - the whole "they screwed up the Americas and wiped out all of the civilizations" bit.

Pointing out that various civilizations/cultures in the Americas were doing a damn good job of wiping each other out long before the Spanish showed up didn't seem to calm her down one bit.

My mother was born in Cuba. If you want to know what ONE Hispanic thinks about illegal immigration you could do a search on my posts. I am not a foaming at the mouth "mine the border" and "shoot the women and children" type but I favor vastly expanding the border patrol, building the fence, cutting off the benefits, ending birthright citizenship, mandatory verification of legal presence in America as a condition of employment, rigorously enforcing our employment laws, and mandatory arrest and deportation of every illegal which law enforcement at any level (Federal, State, local) comes into contact with. I want an end to the lawlessness and I believe our immigration policies should be aimed at benefitting all Americans, not just the rich elites. I'm thoroughly disgusted by the so-called Latino interest groups who pretend to represent my views.

"A majority of Latino voters - 52.4 percent - support initiatives that would not allow the naturalization of foreigners who enter the United States illegally.

"Fifty percent of those surveyed support an increase in the number of U.S. Border Patrol agents along the U.S.-Mexico frontier, as well as laws guaranteeing that employers may only hire foreigners who are living in the United States legally."

My lovely, brilliant daughter-in-law, who legally immigrated to the U.S. from Germany and became a U.S. citizen, is quite annoyed by those who immigrate here illegally and those who allow them to do so.

Hispanics tend to be good citizens, who are family oriented, Christian, and opposed to big government and its tyrranical intrusion into every aspect of life.

As citizens, Hispanics are vastly preferable to the Gringo Left!

AND--they are not Muslims

"Hispanic voters remain very conservative on social and economic issues"
It seems to me that Hispanics should be welcomed with open arms--within the law, of course--and aggressively courted by the Republican Party. It's a match made in heaven.

They are overwhelmingly Catholic. But they are also our fastest growing group of unwed mothers. And while they account for about 3% of our population they account for about 20% of our crime. And if they really oppose big government why do they vote overwhelmingly for socialists both in their home countries and in the USA. They are the first to line up for any government handouts.

The natural conservatism of Hispanics has been WAY oversold. If they are really conservatives then they should start acting like it. One of the first things they could do would be start respecting our laws.

Darth Vader was in favour of small government and tax cuts? I didn't know that. Was his conservative policy speech cut out of Revenge of the Sith?

"Hispanic registered voters are strongly supporting initiatives to reform immigration while penalizing illegal behavior,"

The overwhelming number of Hispanics in America fall into this category. They stood in line and waited and paid their dues. They don't see why line jumpers should be given priority here.

Its pretty clear only two groups of people support this:

illegal alien criminal invaders,

the exploiters of cheap labor who take advantage of them.

Its about time our elected officials at all levels were called to account and compelled to choose between law-abiding American citizens on one hand, and these two groups of criminals on the other.

It's an inside joke to those acquaintances in Canada who equate facism with conservatism. The analogy really is as fictional as the character.
