EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities arrested a 23-year-old man on Sunday in the fatal shooting of a police officer who was gunned down while taking a teenager on a ride-along.
Alberto Alvarez, of East Palo Alto, was taken into custody after an intense manhunt around 6 a.m. in East Palo Alto, where the shooting took place, according the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Richard May, 39, was responding to a disturbance at the Villa Taqueria off University Avenue when the incident occurred around 5 p.m. Saturday, police said. The officer was approaching the suspect, who was walking away from the business, when the man turned around and opened fire on May, police said.
The 14-year-old who was riding in the squad car made the first call to report the shooting. The teenager, who was part of the police department's Explorer program, was not harmed, said East Palo Alto Police Lt. Rod Norris.
After the suspect fled the scene on foot, police blocked off the neighborhood Saturday night to search for the suspect, who was described as a Hispanic male, wearing a black jacket, black shirt and blue jeans and armed with a semiautomatic pistol.
May, who was married with three children, had been on the force for 18 months, Norris said. He was the second officer killed in the line of duty in the department's history.
No mention of his immigration status. Aw, it's probably irrelevant anyway, right?
