A day in the life of President Bush (1/7/06): photos
White House & Google Images ^ | 1/7/06

Posted on 01/07/2006 3:11:18 PM PST by Wolfstar

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President, First Lady and the dogs are spending the weekend at the White House, and had no public appearances scheduled.

The new German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit with President Bush in Washington on Friday. She hopes to improve relations between the two countries strained by predecessor Gerhard Schroeder's opposition to the war in Iraq. If that is the case, however, she is off to a poor start by condemning the U.S. for our terrorist prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. "An institution such as Guantanamo cannot and should not continue to exist like that in the long term," she tells the weekly magazine Der Spiegel in an interview to appear Monday, implicitly calling for it to be closed down.

THE WEEK AHEAD:

Monday, the President will have breakfast with Supreme Court nominee Samuel A. Alito, at the White House. Then he will speak about the No Child Left Behind Act at the North Glen Elementary School in Glen Burnie, Maryland. The First Lady is currently scheduled to attend that with him.

Tuesday, the President will make remarks on the global war on terror at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. Later he will have a photo opportunity with the 2005 Little League Softball World Series Champions.

Wednesday, GWB will have a discussion on the global war on terror in Louisville, Kentucky.

Thursday, the President will travel to Mississippi and Louisiana. He will visit New Orleans where he will speak on Gulf Coast reconstruction. Later that day, he will attend a Republican National Committee dinner at a private residence in Palm Beach, Florida.

Friday, the President will meet with the new Chancellor of Germany at the White House. They will have a joint press availability in the East Room. On Friday, he will also meet in the Oval Office with business leaders on Central American hurricane relief and reconstruction efforts.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the Presidential Radio Address, Saturday, Janaury 7, 2006.

As we begin 2006, we are hearing more good news about the American economy. This week we learned that our economy added 108,000 jobs in December and has added over 400,000 jobs in the last two months. Our unemployment rate is now 4.9 percent, lower than the average rate of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Our economy grew at more than 4 percent in the third quarter of 2005, and it has been growing at nearly that rate for two years. Productivity is high, consumers are confident, and more Americans now own their homes than at any time in our Nation's history.

We've now cut the rate of growth in non-security discretionary spending each year I've been in office. Working with Congress, last year we ended or reduced about 90 low-priority or poorly performing government programs, cut non-security discretionary spending, and stayed on track to meet our goal of cutting the federal deficit in half by 2009.

There are no new photos of the first family or vice president and his family, so this seemed a perfect day to post some photos I've found using Google's image search tool. A few of these have appeared on the Dose before, but many have not. Enjoy.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: This is just a downright gorgeous photo that needs no caption. It was taken during a news conference, Oct. 4, 2004, in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington.

This one came in a close second for photo of the day. Don't know where it was taken or when, but it's beautiful.

The President and Ariel Sharon. Long before they became the leaders of their respective nations, President Bush and Prime Minister Sharon forged a close and unusual friendship, given the age difference between them. The President is receiving regular updates on the Prime Minister's condition through diplomatic channels, and probably also from the Sharon family.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is greeted by President George W. Bush upon the Prime Minister's arrival Monday, April 11, 2005, to the President's ranch in Crawford, Texas.

This is an angle of the flight suit photos I don't remember seeing before on the Dose. It shows the plane in the background with "George W. Bush, Commander-in-Chief" stenciled on it. I've seen photos of one or the other, but not the two together.

This is a mid-term election year, so a few reminders are in order of how GWB has worked hard to help elect Republicans throughout his term. Here, he is being introduced by Speaker Hastert.

GWB greets Congressman Charlie Dent's (R-PA) young son.

The President being introudced by Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV).

The President plans to campaign hard for Republicans this year. Many current senators and representatives owe their jobs to him. I hope they remember that.

A nice photo of GWB greeting well-wishers from the College of Medicine faculty and staff. They were on a White House tour when Marine One arrived, November 2003, and they got to meet the President. This is a behind-the-rope-line angle we don't get to see in most news shots.

This is a great behind-the-rope-line photo of troops and their Commander-in-Chief. The photos were taken at Camp as Sayliuah, Doha, Qatar, during GWB's first term.

Gen. Tommy Franks prepares to introduce the Commander-in-Chief to the troops at Camp as Sayliuah.

This time last year, we were celebrating the upcoming 2nd inaugural of President George Walker Bush. He gave his beautiful wife red roses at the Patriot Ball.

I love this photo, which I think is from the first inaugural. We can only image what each man was thinking at that moment.

The UT 'hook 'em" horns on display during the inaugural parade last year. The entire first family was delighted that the University of Texas Longhorns won the national championship with a win in the Rose Bowl this week.

The W on joyous display during the campaign. This was taken in Wausau, WI, Oct. 7, 2004
