Tory campaign worker resigns after blog posting Updated Fri. Dec. 30 2005 9:12 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

The campaign manager for Conservative Party member Peter Goldring stepped down Friday, after writing a blog posting that called for Alberta's independence.

Gordon Stamp, who posts under the pseudonym "Psycho," wrote on Free Dominion: "I honestly see no benefit for Alberta to remain part of Canada. Seriously, there is absolutely nothing that Canada as a nation offers me."

He goes on to compare Alberta to "a battered wife who has not yet realized that being divorced is better than staying married." While he allows that the statement could be politically incorrect, he writes "that's how I feel."

Peter Goldring issued a statement about the post Friday.

"This evening I learned about comments posted on the Internet by Mr. Gordon Stamp, who has been serving as manager of my campaign in Edmonton East," Goldring said.

"I was deeply disturbed by these comments, which in no way reflect my views or those of the Conservative Party. To the contrary, I have spent my entire adult life fighting for a united Canada, and, in fact, was drawn into public service to fight for Canada as a united federation."

A Liberal party official was forced to step down just days earlier, after another controversial blog posting.

Mike Klander, executive vice-president of the federal Liberal party's Ontario wing, stepped down Boxing Day after photographs of Olivia Chow -- an NDP candidate in Toronto and wife of NDP Leader Jack Layton -- and a chow chow dog were posted on his blog, under the heading Separated at Birth.

Layton expressed his outrage Thursday, calling the post "racist." His wife is Chinese.

"I frankly never expected that we would face such things, that a candidate would be singled out," Layton said.

"I certainly hope racial slurs will come to an end in this campaign."

Layton noted that Europeans who controlled portions of China in the past used to hang signs that read "no dogs or Chinese allowed," and said no Chinese person familiar with their history will ever forget those signs.

"This is no joke, and I think it's a culture of arrogance that has set in . . . and the election will have to deal with it," he said. "It reminds us that insults flow from arrogance. There is far too much of this in today's Liberal party."

I'll be the first to say it - Free Dominion is NOT a blog.

How did they find out Psycho's real identity? Politically connected Freeper beware.

You mean to tell me that "domestic spying" is occurring in Canada also?

If you want to be really anonymous, there or here, you'll have to do a little work.

It's not hard, all the trolls can do it. The main thing is not to use an email or IP address that can be traced to you.

Canada could really use some serious, honest discussion about its future.

Better yet, is not to write anything you wouldn't be prepared to post outside your cubicle at work or in your local paper with your name and address.

What do you expect. The guy gave himself away. He deserves his predicament. I am careful about what I post online these days. As you well know in the last campaign they managed to dig up my posts and those of our candidate. And how did they figure out our real identities? Someone stayed up long hours at the computer. Any idiot who thinks he is anonymous on the internet is a fool.

Gordon Stamp, who posts under the pseudonym "Psycho, has made almost 5000 posts on FD. Many good posts.

He told people through PM's , and hinting in posts, who he was.

MD4BUSH, anyone?

Let this be a good lesson to all of us, loose lips sink ships.

Canada Ping!

Please FReepmail me to get on or off this Canada ping list.

Well, I've always believed the alleged anonymity of the 'net was largely illusional-- being more of a "Molan Labe'" kind of guy, and having seen the DOS-like tree structure of supposedly "secure" pages.

But always, the "post in haste, repent at leasure" rule applies.

I know Gordon Stamp. I met him at a fundraiser dinner once where we shared a table. I didn't know he was "Psycho" on FD. Small world... I wonder if he ever wandered over to FR on occasion.

If Ontario with its demographic sledgehammer brings the Liberals back in you really will see an Albertan Independance movement.

The Greater Toronto "Golden Horseshoe" Area has a population of 7 million in a federation of 30 million. Think of the NYC Tri-State are with 75 million people? Think of California with over 100 million people.
Thats what we are fighting against in Canada, and that is the only think stopping us from winning.
