The terrorist of today are carrying on with the true and pure lifestyle that the original Muslims had in the belief that by living that way they will recreate the Muslim Caliphate. The Salafis and Wahabbis truly believe that by living the way the true Muslims did in the 700's, Allah will bless them and they will defeat the West an impose Sharia law over the West. We can call it a mental illness but make no mistake; that is their staunch belief and in their eyes they are on the true and righteous path.
This dad in Pakistan will get off scott free because all the religious authorites in Pakistan support his behaviour even thoughg they make give lip service to appease the West.
