Cornyn Speaks On Immigration (opposes a fence)
The Monitor ^ | December 28,2005 | Victoria Hirschberg

Posted on 12/28/2005 5:36:33 AM PST by Reaganwuzthebest

MISSION — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said Tuesday that building a fence along the southwest border is unrealistic and ultimately would not deter illegal immigration into the United States.

Cornyn, R-Texas, was in Mission on Tuesday to discuss flood control and the Rio Grande Valley levee system, but spoke briefly with the media about immigration issues and his plan to allow workers into the country legally but temporarily. He said he would not support a bill calling for a security fence — which could start in California and end in Brownsville — although the U.S. House of Representatives approved the measure last week. The Senate will discuss the measure when they reconvene next year, and Cornyn said immigration would be a pertinent issue.

He expects a compromise between the Senate and the House on immigration bills.

"(The wall) is a 19th century solution to a 21st century problem," Cornyn said, calling for a more comprehensive immigration plan. Millions of immigrants, both documented and undocumented, cross daily through the southwest border and Cornyn said his bill permits workers to enter for a set time period, calls for increased enforcement at the border and more investigations into employers that hire illegal immigrants.

Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz said he would oppose any wall cutting through his border city.

"I think we need to be looking at amicable solutions," he said. "(A wall) would put us back 100 years. A wall isn’t going to solve anything."

So what's a compromise to Cornyn, a massive amnesty/guest worker program with no fence? That's not compromise it's surrender and those in the House who actually care about this issue should tell the good Senators no deal.

How do you spell R.I.N.O?

Texas is one of those places where Big Business likes illegals . Low labor prices and stick the citizens with the bill.

Another open borders elitist at work.

When can we get this RINO out of office?

Immigration and border security is my #1 issue for 2006 and 2008.

No fence and then let all the 'workers' in and expect them to go home on their own!

Why do we have idiots for politicians?

They are about to back door this amnesty program on their base. When they do, it will be ugly for 2006.

Notice how a fence became a wall in Cornyn's and the mayor's comments? We have border crossing areas all along the southern border where those entering legally may cross. A fence only stops those who would cross illegally.

No deal is exactly right! We are better off with the status quo then we are with a guest worker plan because once we open that Pandora's box we will never get it shut. There will be no need for any enforcement because our borders will be effectively erased.

I would rather wait until we have had a chance to make the American people just a little more angry and then we can start tossing Senators out of office.

Aren't there some here who would swear on the Bible that Cornyn is a conservative? He is nothing short of a bought-and-paid for RINO. I imagine that PR firm and Mexico's known attempt to strongarm senators has gotten to him.

Him saying a fence sets us back a hundred years is straight out of Mexico and the democrat's playbook.

Disgusting.

Cornyn is no Rhino..lol. Rush says he is 'one of his all-time favorite Senators'. He said it on his show the other day. Cornyn is solid as a rock on conservative issues. You know, this country has plenty of laws already on the books about immigration...they just have not enforced them properly and the libs have undermined them at every turn. Let's try to enforce the ones we have and get tough about those who break them.

Texas is one of those places where Big Business likes illegals .

Said like true liberal! How do Big Liberals in Homoland treat illegals? ...they want to give them drivers license and reduced tuition for illegal immigrate children. Oh, and Kalifornia liberals want give them free medical treatment too.

Big Liberals hate Big Business almost as much as Big Media!

Cornyn is no RINO thats for sure and I am not sure Republicans have ever been the party of stopping illegal immigration.

Immigration and border security is my #1 issue for 2006 and 2008.

You and 200+ million Americans. Now that we have FINALLY gotten their attention, politicians appease illegals and their supporters at their peril.

A few of the slow-witted ones still haven't gotten the message. Unfortunately, Hillery has. Expect New Border-Control Hillary (complete with Fence, Deportation Orders and Business Fines) for the Presidential race.

A wall conjures up all kinds of images, while a lowly fence would not. They are about to back door this, and they will use the same tactics as the Meir's debacle to try and accomplish this goal. We have been around this track before NRCC and NRSC!

Texas is one of those places where Big Business likes illegals.

All the supporters of a massive amnesty/guest worker program are also opposed to any new barriers that would keep out illegals. That's because they know it would work and would upset the cheap labor gravy train.

No we don't have idiots for politicians. Evident when the House overwhelmingly passed the recent immigration and border security bill. Now the ball is in the Senate's court. The reason the House voted so well on this issue is because their damn phones were ringing off the hook while they were in session. Make sure your Senators phone is ringing off the hook when the issue is in the Senate. Even if you think they will vote wrong let em have a call from you letting them know you care and you are watching. They live by the vote and really don't want to be un-employed. It is now or never!!! The issue has never been as hot as it presently is. I still have faith in Democracy. Call your Senator soon!!!
