Bush reads up on Teddy Roosevelt, US troops Reuters
CRAWFORD, Texas - President George W. Bush is spending part of his Christmas holiday reading about the post-presidential years of Theodore Roosevelt and the lives of U.S. troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
Bush was reading "When Trumpets Call: Theodore Roosevelt After the White House," by Patricia O'Toole, and "Imperial Grunts: The American Military on the Ground," by Robert Kaplan while on holiday at his Texas ranch, said White House spokesman Trent Duffy.
The book about Teddy Roosevelt is about the former president's African safari and his attempt to re-enter politics after he left the White House in 1909.
"Imperial Grunts" is an account of the daily lives of U.S. elite forces as told by journalist Robert Kaplan, who toured with several of the units in various countries.
Asked whether there was any significance that Bush, who has three years left in office, was reading a book about the post-White House years of a former president, Duffy replied that Bush is a "history buff" and "avid reader."
"The president knows full well that he's got a lot of time left in this second term and he's going to accomplish big things, as he's talked about repeatedly," Duffy said.
In addition to reading, Bush is also spending time on two of his favorite pursuits, clearing brush and biking.
I can see it now, by tomorrow the 'Rats are going to be comparing him to TR and say he is an "imperialist" president.
Do I detect a hint of sarcasm?
Headline: Bush soft pedals while on vacation, reads book
about Iraq, burns brush behind him.
Yeah, I resent the title "Imperial Grunts"
America never has been an "Imperial" power unlike our Europal friends
They may try to say that since he is reading about TR's retirement that Bush is probably planning to go on an African and Asian safari to kill as many (endangered!) animals as possible.
"The book about Teddy Roosevelt is about the former president's African safari and his attempt to re-enter politics after he left the White House in 1909."
The inference the left would most like to make from this is that poor, pathetic, nothing-to-do W is going to look for some way to re-enter politics after his second term.
I am very curious what he will do with his years (one might suppose them to be many) after the White House. The job is so large and he fills it so well, also being in excellent health, that it is difficult for me to imagine him lazing about, or taking a so-so job. I'm eager to learn of his plans when he is getting into transition mode.
Has it really come to that? Do left-leaning Democrats regard TR as "evil? I can't believe it. Keep me posted if you follow up on this.
The press is dreaming and longing for GWB's retirement years...hint, hint.
I, on the other hand, feel encouraged that he's interested in TR at all! Maybe this is what's giving him that new "edge."
Unlike BJ Klintoon, I am absolutely certain that Bush plans to retire, the only job I think he would consider taking at this point would be Commissioner of Baseball.
Bush understands that his duty is to serve the American people and lead the free world through one of its most difficult periods. BJ won't leave because he found out that being POTUS was the easiest way to get dates.
Regardless, the left will try to find a way to "spin" anything Bush does in a negative way.
More media BS.
The main point I take from this is that Bush apparently doesn't think the NYT is worth reading.
Some liberals do, some don't.
Over on the far left, alot of them loathe him and hate him. I had liberal teachers in college who looked like that wanted to vomit when talking about him.
I had other liberal teachers who liked him but were critical of some things.
FWIT, McCain is a huge TR fan, and reads everything he can on him, and often tries to model himself on TR.
Of course McCain is nuts, so take it for what its worth.
Why is it reporters can never remember he's enough of a history buff to HAVE A DEGREE IN HISTORY?
I wonder if plans to go heads up against the Mexican border troops threatening our border patrol. All the way to Mexico City, I say. Go Bush Go!!
I have a plan.
As Iraq gets on its feet, and we downsize our deployment,
what say we post our awesome National Guard on our southern border.
But, darn it! You gave away the rest of the plan! Sssshhh....
;-)
Intersting about the Roosevelts: Teddy gave us world power, and Franklin gave us socialism!
From Harvard, no less... Oh well, we've grown accustomed to snarky Reuters pieces about the President, so what else is new?
It is one heck of an insightful report from professional journalists observing the dawn of change in middleast relationships
TR is without a doubt my favorite President
