when I was a young woman, I read a book about the official investigation into the murder of the Tsar and his wife and all of his children. Since that time, I started buying books on about the Tsar and his wife and his children and I have several books about Russian royalty that got out of Russia safely.

Why don't you do the actual historical research about what happened instead of listening to hearsay? The truth is so much more interesting!

BTW, Queen Victoria's father loved women! He had a beloved mistress for years but duty called and he married Victoria's mother and he is the actual father of Victoria. Victoria got her looks from him.

The truth is unknown, except that it is a fact that Alexei and Maria's bones were not found and not later reburied in St. Petersburg in 1998 with the rest of the family.

Alexei and Maria are wildcards now. Nobody knows what happened to them...or is telling.

Now I am dating a young woman from the 190000 zip code in Russia (within a mile of the Winter Palace) where the grandfather was born in 1907 and apparently knew Alexei who was born in 1904. The grandfather was murdered by a doctor in Kazakstan during a routine physical in the late 40s...apparently because of something to do with the Tsarevich. From a family I might marry into, "hearsay" has a different ring, especially when you know that many authors are left wing fools who rely on "hearsay" to write their books as well.

Digging up history doesn't stop when a so-called authoritarian history book is written. I can do research and write what might become the best book on the Romanovs ever written. If I had the time which I do not. If I were to find Alexei's bones...I might reconsider and write a book.

My "family" in Russia has a group of octogenarians who might die soon and I am scrambling now to get their stories.

The inescapable conclusion is that, since no other member of European Royalty prior to Queen Victoria had hemophilia, this must mean that some unknown man who was not royalty popped her mother. In other words, stated differently, Queen Victoria was a bastard! More than that, since virtually the entire European royalty is descended from Queen Victoria, this means that all of the Royal Families of Europe are bastards!

Mutations happen. Classic hemophilia is caused by one wrong gene on one X chromosome. When a female inherits that chromosome, she's a carrier. When a male inherits it, he's a hemophiliac.

For Queen Victoria to have inherited the carrier X chromosome from her biological father without a mutation, her father would have had to have been a hemophiliac himself. In those days there was no treatment, and hemophiliacs rarely made it past childhood, much less grew up to commit adultery with princesses. It's perfectly legitimate biology to believe that Queen Victoria was a hemophilia carrier because of a defective gene on a mutated X chromosome inherited from either of her parents.

Great point.

And getting back to Alexei: this means that he probably would not have made it to 1960 as a monk in Siberia which is what the tradition is in my Russian family.

Apparently one paper cut and its all over.

So he wasn't "Heiko" or the Polish KGB defector either.

A skeleton of a twenty something Alexei might be in Russia somewhere.

But I am still investigating the "family tradition" that he died at age 53 in 1960 in a Siberian monastery.

The latter brings up images of the end of "Crime and Punishment" where Rasxolnikov and his ex-prostitute 18 year old wife become Christians.

Sorry, I meant age 56 when he died. Alexei was born in 1904.

He was not executed with this family in 1918. He and his sister Maria survived.

I have always been fascinated with Russian history but this stuff gets old. Where is your evidence that he and Maria survived? You say there were no bones from them present yet they were all there when they were rounded up and taken to the room. Then where did they go and who took them? And why Maria of all the girls?

Correct. If Victoria's mother was a carrier, she would have had a 50-50 chance of being one as well, or, her off-spring could have spontaneously mutated.

Naoborot. Pochemy vy tak dumaete? It is only just getting interesting. You've been fascinated with a "Russian history" that was largely written and rewritten by the leftist communists. Much of what the White Army did died with the White Army soldiers and, later, those who were purged. There is still a ton of information to glean off the old people in Russia. A few years ago, I froze while I walked around Stalingrad (Volgograd) with old men who fought there...asking them details about various battles. They were saying things not found in any books.

[Where is your evidence that he and Maria survived? You say there were no bones from them present yet they were all there when they were rounded up and taken to the room. Then where did they go and who took them? And why Maria of all the girls?]

The communists said the family were all present, or at least those present at the execution were all SUPPOSED to be good communists. Do you think they would have reported back to Lenin "We decided to spare the best looking girl and sell the heir to the throne to our White Army contacts for 3 million rubles."

They never photographed the dead bodies which is what they would have been EXPECTED to do. I am amazed that Lenin did not execute the execution squad for this failure. The Russian communists needed to see Nicholas the Second and Alexei, in particular, lying with bullet holes in their heads. The male heir was too much of a threat falling into White Army hands.

Yet DNA tests now show that Alexei and Maria's bones are not with the rest of the family.

Sure, it is possible that Maria was raped and then killed within an hour of the rest of them and her bones lie within a mile of the Ipetia House. Why Maria? Because one of the criminals would have fancied her. It is also possible that Alexei was the victim of someone who had a penchant for boys and his bones lie within a mile of the execution scene.

But one might also assume that Maria was spared because her beauty and/or intelligence melted someone's heart. She would have become that person's wife (she wouldn't really have much of a choice either).

And it is very plausible that the leader of the execution squad did NOT want to carry out the full order and deliberately spared the most important victim: Alexei...who would have been given over to the White Army OR to Russian Orthodox Church members to pass through the monastery system.

It is possible that the Red Army had elements that would have wanted to defect to the White Army if only the Bolsheviks could lose face with the population, making it safe to defect. Such elements would have pulled Alexei from the execution lineup. One can imagine that the true history had Nicholas the Second praising God that his son and a daughter were being spared before realizing that his other daughters, his wife and himself were about to die.

Good post - - Having read several books about Rasputin, I swerved into all the Romanov theories and the subject has always fascinated me. Good luck.

Alexei had hemophelia and was increasingly sick by 1918, even assuming he survived the executions, I'd be surprised if he survived even a year without the Imperial medical care.

I believe that it was Alexei's hemophelia which brought Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin into the inner circle, as Rasputin was able to successfully convince Alexandra that he had supernatural healing powers and could cure Alexei.

Are there any theories on what may have happened to Maria, had she really survived? I have a Russian-born daughter who looks remarkably like her. It’s unsettling.

I could not find out how to post a comment but what I would like to know is if anyone has any information on if Nicholas Romanov was a grandchild to King Christian 9th King of Denmark. I remember reading this somewhere but when I tried finding it again I couldn't. I would like to know because King Christian is my 4th great grandpa and if Nicholas was a grandchild of his that would mean I am related to the Romanov's also. I have been searching for every trying to find where i read that so if anybody has any information please reply back!
