Woman indicted in 2 Oregon fires
Washington Times ^ | 12/17/5 | Valerie Richardson

A suspect in a 1998 Vail Mountain firebombing was indicted yesterday in connection with two Oregon fires as part of a federal sweep aimed at resolving a wave of long-unsolved ecoterrorist attacks.

U.S. Attorney Kirk Engdahl told U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Coffin that she was a suspect in the Vail arson, a $12 million rampage that destroyed buildings and ski-lift sites at the resort.

The indictments came a week after a five-state sweep in which federal authorities arrested six suspects for a string of ecoterrorist attacks between 1998 and 2001 in Colorado and the Pacific Northwest.

...(ELF) and Animal Liberation Front, two loosely organized ecoterrorist groups, took responsibility for most of the half-dozen attacks. ... ELF released an e-mail blaming the arson on the resort's plans to expand into what it described as lynx habitat, although the small bobcat hadn't been spotted near Vail in 30 years.

The Vail Mountain fire still ranks as the most expensive single act of ecoterrorism in U.S. history. Prosecutors have not charged anyone in the Vail arson -- Miss Gerlach is the first suspect publicly identified -- but Mr. Engdahl's remarks raised hopes that the crime might soon be solved.

"We're cautiously optimistic that maybe there will be a prosecution in this case," Eagle County Undersheriff Jeff Layman said.

Mr. Engdahl told the court that Miss Gerlach is also a suspect in the 2001 firebombing of a University of Washington horticultural research center in Seattle; ...

About time they started getting tough on domestic terrorists! This puts me in mind of a movie trailer I saw over the weekend for a new flick called "Hoot" that glorifies terrorism to stop a construction project! Makes heroes of kids sabotaging a construction site!

Hollywood has been glorifying eco-terrorism for years, nothing new from the Left Coast moonbats. I stopped paying attention after they hijacked the Dr. Doolittle classics.

Friends and family go on and on about how "peaceful" she is, while the prosecutor has a long list of crimes she's been involved in all over the Northwest as well as the Vail fires.

This one needs to be locked up for a long long time.

Glad to hear it. They recently prosecuted a little Eco Terrorist from Wisconsin, too. He'd been on the lamb for 6 years, then was arrested shoplifting CDs, LOL! He released thousands of mink from mink farms here and in other midwestern states. Close to half a million in damages to the farmers.

As for "Hoot" is that movie based on the Carl Hiaasen novel for kids? If so, there's another author off my list...

What possibility is there that these thugs got caught by minute phone surveillances over extended time spans.
Will there a leaker come forward, spill the beans, so that terrorists in our midst can get off the hook to hold their celebrating dance for having beaten the legal system?

"As for "Hoot" is that movie based on the Carl Hiaasen novel for kids?"

Good question!

I just checked and the answer is "Yes."

Hiaasen is a good writer, but his myopic view of South Florida issues has warped his outlook, and his protagonists have gotten progressively more terroristic.

Carl Hiaasen
(sigh)

Now, now, her self-esteem is what she hopes to elevate by her criminality. Prison is the perfect solution for both of these traits.

I'd guess they got caught by bragging to their friends about what they'd done - on their websites!

The FBI has been trying to infiltrate these eco-terrorist groups for years. They might have finally gotten a phony Herbal inside. If so, congrats, you can finally take a bath.

yah. This crew is in deep kimchee over these arsons.

There was an article in the Oregonian over the weekend that said the Federal Task Force had turned someone and sent them along as a wired confidential informant. It sounds like there is enough evidence on these people to put them away for decades in Federal prison.

And there are probably more arrests to come.
