The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

He hasn't been heard from in more than a year, but one news site reports that it has obtained a new tape of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

But U.S. officials are skeptical of the report, CBS News reports.

The story from Pajhwok Afghan News, dated Tuesday, describes a new 30-minute tape with a message from Taliban commander Mullah Dodallah and the al Qaeda leader, according to the IntelCenter, a U.S. government contractor that does work for intelligence agencies.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Acting on a tip, MND-B Soldiers were moving to the house of a suspected kidnapping cell leader Jan. 28 west of Baghdad when they came across the decapitated bodies of three Iraqis on a soccer field.
The Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, detained the suspected criminal who lives just north of the soccer field. In the house, Soldiers found a pistol, a sniper rifle, improvised explosive device batteries, timers and circuit boards.
The patrol notified Iraqi authorities who later removed the bodies of the three Iraqis.
While searching three other houses in the area, the U.S. patrol detained three additional suspects when they found four 155mm rounds, two with cell phones attached and rigged for detonation, numerous IED trigger devices, one AK-47 and anti-Iraqi forces literature.
In a separate incident, Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1-10 Mnt., were conducting a patrol in central Baghdad Jan. 29 when they discovered two dead local nationals with spent 9mm casings next to them. The patrol stayed on the scene until Iraqi Police arrived.
These incidents are under investigation.

Blast Kills 10 Civilians; Troops Nab Suspects, Find Weapons

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2006 – A bombing near a candy store in Iraq and the capture of suspected terrorists and weapons top news reported today by military officials in Baghdad.
A bomb exploded yesterday near a candy story in Iskandariyah, 30 miles south of Baghdad, rocking several businesses and killing 10 Iraqi civilians and wounding three .American military units from the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division's quick response force were dispatched to the blast to investigate. The incident is under investigation by Iraqi authorities.

In southern Baghdad, soldiers on patrol with the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division nabbed two suspected terrorists and discovered a weapons cache Jan. 28, officials noted. The cache consisted of five AK-47 assault rifles with magazines, two 9 mm pistols, a rocket-propelled grenade, a bayonet, an Iraqi army protective vest, two U.S. military maps of Baghdad and a DVD with anti-coalition propaganda.

Iran and Indonesian agree to cooperate on fighting terror

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Indonesian Foreign Minister Noer Hassan Wirajuda told reporters in Jakarta last Wednesday their two nations had agreed to cooperate in the war on terror and also signed five economic agreements and 11 memoranda of understanding for cooperation on oil, gas, petrochemicals, trade, science and education, IRNA news agency reported.

Iranian-Indonesian trade is now worth $300 million annually.

Wirajuda thanked the Iranian nation for its assistance to the survivors of the December tsunami, which killed more than 170,000 people in Indonesia`s Aceh province alone.

Wirajuda also offered support for Iran`s nuclear program, which Tehran insists is peaceful. Wirajuda said, 'Indonesia`s stance is a principled one and it supports the legitimate rights of the Non-Proliferation Treaty signatories for peaceful use of nuclear technology. We believe that the issue should be solved through talks and within framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency.'

Mottaki said that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been invited to attend the upcoming African-Asian summit meeting in Jakarta, while Indonesian parliament speaker Agung Laksono will also visit Iran in the near future.

Suspicious Fog Fills Downtown Mosque
Area Near Mosque Evacuated


SACRAMENTO -- An area of downtown Sacramento was evacuated Monday afternoon after a suspicious fog filled a mosque.

The mosque is located near Fourth and V streets.

Authorities said a woman entered the building shortly after noon prayers and left something behind that emitted a smoky haze. The woman had not been identified and remained at large Monday evening.

The Sacramento Fire Department was called and firefighters noticed an odor and determined that the haze was not from smoke. The building and a one-block radius around it was evacuated and a hazardous materials team was called to the scene.


"A female white adult entered the mosque earlier in the afternoon and emitted some type of fogging device. The room was filled with some type of fog," Sacramento Police Department Sgt. Terrell Marshall said.

"It was shocking. Everyone was trying to find out what was happening. People come to this mosque on a daily basis ... hundreds pray here every Friday," said Basim Elkarra, who attends the mosque.

A hazmat team entered the mosque and determined the fog was caused by a dry fire extinguisher that was activated.(snip)

Iran Sets Up Secret Team to Infiltrate UN Nuclear Watchdog

Iran has formed a top secret team of nuclear specialists to infiltrate the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, the UN-sponsored body that monitors its nuclear programme, The Daily Telegraph has been told.

Its target is the IAEA's safeguards division and its aim is to obtain information on the work of IAEA inspectors so that Iran can conceal the more sensitive areas of its nuclear research, according to information recently received by western intelligence.

Teheran insists that the sole purpose of the controversial programme is to develop alternative energy sources. But many western governments, including Britain and the United States, believe it is secretly developing a nuclear arsenal.

The operation to target the IAEA is being run by Hosein Afarideh, the former head of the Iranian parliament's energy committee.

Mr Afarideh, reported to have close links with Iran's ministry of intelligence, is in regular contact with a team of Iranian nuclear engineers seconded to work at the IAEA's Vienna headquarters.



According to western intelligence reports, Mr Afarideh heads a three-man team at the headquarters of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran in Teheran, to prevent more embarrassing disclosures about its nuclear facilities.

In the past the Iranians have managed to conceal key facilities from IAEA inspectors, including the Natanz uranium enrichment plant, 100 miles north of Isfahan. They were reluctantly forced to admit the existence of Natanz and other top secret facilities three years ago after Iranian exile groups provided details of their operations.

As a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran is entitled to full access to the IAEA for help with the development of its nuclear programme, so long as it is purely for peaceful purposes.

But western intelligence officials believe that the Iranians are now taking advantage of their access to the IAEA to spy on its inspection procedures so that they can conceal sensitive areas of their nuclear operations from the outside world.

"The Iranians are getting increasingly concerned about the effectiveness of the IAEA's inspections," a senior western intelligence official told The Daily Telegraph.

"For this reason they are deliberately targeting the IAEA so that they can be better prepared when the inspectors visit their facilities."

An IAEA spokesman refused to comment on the intelligence reports. However, an official who confirmed that a number of Iranian nuclear engineers were working at the IAEA's headquarters said the agency had set up stringent safeguards to ensure that no country had access to the inspection teams investigating its nuclear facilities.

"We have a firewall system that prevents any member state finding out how the inspection teams working on that country operate," said the official.

Despite this close supervision, Iranian scientists working at the IAEA in Vienna travel frequently to Teheran, where they meet Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran officials including Mr Afarideh. Mr Afarideh is also in close contact with Mohsein Fakhrizadeh, head of the organisation's physical research centre.

IAEA inspectors have made repeated requests to interview Mr Fakhrizadeh about key aspects of Iran's nuclear programme. But the Iranian government has refused to grant them access to him.

IAEA experts predict that Iran will be able to produce weapons-grade uranium within three years if the processing plants operate without international supervision.
