The Israeli Air Force targeted a car outside of Gaza City on Wednesday afternoon in which suspected terrorists were traveling, killing four people and wounding three more.
The IDF confirmed it had attempted an additional airstrike later in the evening, although the targeted fugitive apparently escaped.
Islamic Jihad officials identified the man as Khader Habib, a spokesman for the group.
The first car struck was carrying members of the Popular Resistance Committee, who were allegedly on their way to commit a terror attack when the military struck them down.
According to the army, the car was headed for the Karni crossing, where the PRC members planned to detonate the explosives-laden vehicle.
The missile strike resulted in a massive blast due the explosives being transported in the car.
The IDF said that the targeted fugitives were also responsible for numerous mortar and rocket attacks against Israel in the past.
Dozens gathered in an angry crowd outside the hospital morgue and emergency room in Gaza, chanting, "God is Great" and "Destroy Israel."
Later in the evening, Palestinians fired two Kassam rockets and a mortar shell towards the western Negev, supposedly in retaliation for the airstrike.
The rockets landed in open fields. No one was wounded and no damage was caused in the attacks.
Elsewhere after the IAF strike, Military Police arrested a Palestinian in his late teens at the Kalandiya checkpoint near Ramallah.
Police discovered two Molotov cocktails in the youth's possessions and alerted additional security forces.
The suspect was taken to the juvenile division for investigation.
