75-year-old man 'shook up' after shooting, killing intruder
By Tim Sturrock and Liz Fabian
A 75-year-old man shot and killed a 21-year-old who was burglarizing his home Tuesday afternoon in the Peach Orchard neighborhood, Macon police said.
Randolph Baker died at The Medical Center of Central Georgia at about 3 p.m. after being shot in the head, police Lt. Carl Fletcher said.
The resident, whose name was not released by police, was entering his home on Irving Avenue after a shopping trip at about 2:15 p.m. when he discovered two intruders in his home, police said.
Police Capt. Wayne Avery said the resident saw one intruder run from the living room to a back bedroom, followed him and watched him climb out the window, Avery said.
When the resident turned around, he saw the second intruder, later identified as Baker, come toward him, Avery said. The homeowner fired a handgun once, striking Baker, he said.
"He's kind of shook up," Avery said of the homeowner.
Fletcher said the case appears to be one of self defense, but the case will be sent to the Bibb County district attorney, who will decide if charges will be filed.
"He reacted," Fletcher said of the 75-year-old. "That was his reaction to protect himself and his property."
Baker's mother, Ernestine Chapman, arrived at the scene as police investigated, screaming about Baker's injury and asking police questions. Chapman said she left the scene to see her son in the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Baker had been in the Bibb County jail 12 times in the past three years, Bibb County sheriff's spokesman Capt. David Davis said. Baker had cases pending in Bibb County Superior Court for obstruction, possession of cocaine and theft by receiving, according to the Bibb County Superior Clerk's Office.
When police returned to the neighborhood shortly before 5 p.m., they arrested Baker's alleged accomplice, Jerald Jerome Bright, 26, and charged him with burglary, said Sgt. Cornelius Pendleton.
Yellow crime scene tape roped off the front yard of the pale yellow wood-frame house as police officers and detectives discussed the case.
Neighbors, who did not want to be identified, said they were not surprised about the daytime burglary.
They said they didn't know their neighbor very well because he kept to himself.
Telegraph photographer Grant Blankenship contributed to this report.

Do not mess with old men with guns. We get very irritable and hard to get along with. I love stories with happy endings. :)

MIDDAY UPDATE: DISTRICT ATTORNEY STILL TO REVIEW SHOOTING DEATH CASEA decision of whether to charge a 75-year-old man who shot an intruder in his house Tuesday could be made next week, Bibb County District Attorney Howard Simms said.
Macon police have said the case appears to be self defense, although the case will be sent to Simms' office for review.
Randolph Baker, 21, died Tuesday afternoon when he was shot inside 75-year-old Russell Renfroe's house on Irving Avenue, according to a police report.
Renfroe told police he was returning home when he saw two men inside his house, the report stated. Renfroe told police the first intruder he saw jumped out of a window. Renfroe told police that as the second intruder, later identified as Baker, moved toward the window, Renfroe shot in the air to scare him off, according to the report. The shot, police said, struck Baker's head and he was pronounced dead at The Medical Center of Central Georgia within an hour.
Simms said he hasn't yet received the report from police about the shooting. Cases involving homeowners who shoot intruders are typically sent to Simms' office for review.
"If somebody unlawfully enters your home and you have a reasonable belief they're there to do you harm, you have a right to defend yourself," Simms said.
Although, if he "shot in the air" and hit the guy in the head, he does have bad aim! :-)
