MITCHELLVILLE, Md. (AP) - Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley formally announced state Delegate Anthony Brown on Monday as his running mate in the governor's race, saying the veteran is someone who understands leadership.
The men appeared with their families before about 50 sign-waiving supporters in Brown's home county of Prince George's. They then left for a series of joint appearances in Baltimore, Frederick and Hagerstown.
O'Malley and Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan are seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich, who will seek a second term next year.
O'Malley referred several times to Brown's military service and said Brown had demonstrated he is hardworking and self-disciplined.
Brown returned this summer from a tour of duty in Iraq with the Army Reserves. A lawyer, he spent nine months in the military's legal branch, the Judge Advocate Corps, working in Baghdad with the Iraqi transitional government's Ministry of Displacement and Migration.
Brown called the ticket a "true partnership" and said his core issues in the campaign will be education, adoption and foster care.
Brown, 44, was elected to the House of Delegates in 1998 and was named majority whip in 2004. He lives in Mitchellville.

The question is, what does he bring to the ticket except for the color of his skin?
The Iraqi vet part might make some right-side moderates otherwise uncomfortable with O'Malley a bit more comfortable; he brings his base of support from PG County with him; and if Ehrlich picks another African-American running mate, presumably Brown neutralizes any potential gain Ehrlich might get from that.
This is a reference to the comment that the Baltimore Sun made about Michael Steele when he was announced as Ehrlich's running mate. Both men are well credentialed and qualified for the position. Of course, this time the Sun only points out Brown's actual qualifications. No attempt at the "balance" that they virtually always include in any article that should be positive about a Republican.
There is no downside or opposite viewpoint when a "journalist" writes about a Democrat.
This guy may be talented and very well qualified, but he is making a mistake teaming up with O'Malley.
