CA: Damaged goods no more (The Gub extols Gray Davis)
LA Times ^ | 12/11/05 | Editorial

Posted on 12/11/2005 11:00:36 AM PST by NormsRevenge

BACK IN 2003, Arnold Schwarzenegger vilified Gov. Gray Davis as an incompetent tax-and-spend chief executive who needed to be booted from office. Everything that was wrong with California was laid at Davis' feet. The Republican Schwarzenegger won the recall election, and Democrat Davis suffered the ignominy of being the first California governor to be recalled from office. Davis didn't exactly slink away from Sacramento into oblivion, but he was viewed by many as a sort of Charlie Brown character who never got things right.

Two short years later, Gov. Schwarzenegger stood next to Davis in the state Capitol and extolled him as if he had been one of the state's greatest chief executives.

The occasion was the unveiling of Davis' official portrait. There was no word of the administration that allowed the state to plunge billions of dollars in debt or slip into an unprecedented energy crisis; instead, there was talk of how Davis and wife Sharon have become friends with the governor and wife Maria Shriver, getting together for dinners and conversations.

If any clearer indicator were needed that Schwarzenegger no longer finds Davis to be damaged goods politically, consider the recent appointment of Susan Kennedy as the governor's chief of staff, and Daniel Zingale as Shriver's. Both were former Cabinet secretaries of Davis.

Davis was an incompetent fool who always waited until something was on the brink of disaster before departing a fund raiser he arrived late at to consider doing something about it. The only place that Davis' portrait deserves to be displayed is as a covering for a urinal cake.

To any sane person, it just shows that Schwarzenegger is also clueless.

What did they expect Schwarzenegger to do, put an ice-pick in Davis' back?

Only if Davis were a conservative Republican.

Bill Clinton's portrait hangs in the White House, and the ceremony was presided over by President Bush. Governments have protocol procedures that must be followed no matter the person involved. If I remember correctly, and I may very well not, Harry Truman made a fuss about riding in the same limo with Ike to the capitol for Ike's Inauguration.

Google is a wonderful thing for old memories. I decided to test my memory. Here is what I found.

(who sat stone-faced on the ride with his successor up Pennsylvania Avenue). Ike and Harry Truman (who declined, at the last minute, to go to Ike at his hotel, forcing Ike to go to him at the White House).

Governments have protocol procedures that must be followed

That's the reason for the appointment of Gray's former Cabinet secretary Susan Kennedy as the governor's new chief of staff?

Just where did I say that? If facts are too much trouble for you to deal with I suggest you find something else to do.

You carefully ignored that, then whined when caught.

This is a rare statement for me, but you are an IDIOT. There were two issues involved, and one of them regarded the ceremony that the governor attended. That is the one I addressed. I frankly don't give a damn what your feeble little nit picking mind finds to play with. No reply is expected, nor will it be read.

For those not familiar with California political institutions, the LA Times is a liberal stalwart.

The article is designed to drive a bigger wedge between Schwarzenegger and the traditional, conservative base of the CAGOP. The Times clearly understands that Schwarzenegger has fouled his nest with the CAGOP base and are striving to further antagonize that growing schism, stooping to whatever means possible, to accomplish their goals. In this case a traditional formality, closely controlled by good manners and common sense with no meaningful implications on Davis' tenure in office.
