Purdue Christmas tree gets name back

December 8, 2005

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Norwegian spruce in the Purdue Memorial Union's Great Hall is a Christmas tree again.

The Purdue Student Union Board, which had christened the 28-foot tree the ''Union tree'' in the interest of diversity, voted this week to return to the traditional name.

The decision followed a lengthy discussion over what the tree has been called over the years -- and why, said Heather Owen, program director at the Purdue Memorial Union.

The decision to refer to the tree as the ''Union tree'' drew criticism from some who said the change didn't make sense.

''It's a Christmas tree,'' Yucel Parsak said. ''Why do we have to change it?''

Can you, or someone else, explain to me how renaming something so as not to offend is "diversity"? I don't get it.

For example, the Union Tree is "diverse" but a Christmas Tree isn't. I suppose they have a big "Eight Day Union Candle" instead of a Menorah as well?

The building where the Purdue Christmas tree is located is called the "Purdue Memorial Union," hence the name "Union Tree."

I see your point but let me ask something else. What time of year do they put it up? Do they decorate it? Is it a spruce looking tree?

Shakespeare said it 500 years or so ago in Romeo and Juliet. He was right then, he is right now.

What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet

What is so offensive about Christmas?

Here's something offensive:

Qur’an 9:5 “Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war.”

Qur’an 9:112 “The Believers fight in Allah’s Cause, they slay and are slain, kill and are killed.”

Qur’an 9:29 “Fight those who do not believe until they all surrender, paying the protective tax in submission.” Here's something disgusting, yet not peep in MSM about it:

UK: Police sponsor jihad conference

"It was advertised as a diverse event to which non-Muslims were invited and the impression one got from the website was of a celebration of Middle Eastern culture, food, music and children’s activities in a London milieu.

To my utter horror -- and I should have written this report two days ago but my physical and emotional shock have rendered me nearly inert -- it was a seven-hour call to Jihad by a succession of ranting and shouting rabble-rousers.

The eminent barrister Michael Mansfield QC, wearing black and white keffiyah scarf, shouted into the mike about the heinous crimes of the Western coalition countries. The crowd chanted and thundered its appreciation.

The terrifying demagogue George Galloway ascended the podium and exhorted the crowd to stand up for the redemption of the oppressed Muslim world or else the nation had better get ready for ‘rioting in every street in Britain.’.

Read it all, it's shocking.

Yet love they nieghbor, peace on earth, goodwill to all men, is what these anti religion neandrathals call offensive? At least they could pick on a religion that really IS offensive, and should be banned.

To a religion that believes that kind of trash love thy neighbor, peace on earth and goodwill to all IS offensive.

I flew out of Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood (FL) Airport earlier this week. Upon entering the terminal, I heard and saw Christmas carolers. There was a small sign and I am almost positive it read "Winter Fest Carols."
