Cameras accuse 2,600 of speeding
Akron Beacon Journal ^ | Wed, Dec. 07, 2005 | John Higgins, Andale Gross and David Knox

Posted on 12/08/2005 11:00:41 AM PST by Ben Mugged

Nestor Traffic Systems photographed more than 2,600 alleged speeders this fall -- snapping as many as seven cars a minute -- in and around Akron school zones.

The take in fines in that 19-day period: nearly half a million dollars.

The tripod-mounted mobile cameras nailed the most drivers in the 1400 and 1500 blocks of Copley Road, near Erie Island Elementary School in West Akron. Nestor nabbed more than 1,000 drivers there and issued $182,000 in fines, nearly 40 percent of the total.

The second-busiest stakeout was in the 400 block of Darrow Road near Betty Jane Elementary School in Goodyear Heights: 301 vehicles were photographed, and $51,250 in fines was generated.

The site that netted the fewest violations -- just one -- was in the 700 block of Lovers Lane, near where a 10-year-old boy going to school was killed by a hit-skip driver in September.

Among all the violations, the average speed was 12 to 13 mph over the limit, according to an Akron Beacon Journal analysis of data supplied by Nestor to Akron officials.

In many cases, the cameras didn't cut much slack: 40 percent of those fined $150 were going 10 mph or less over the posted limit. One person was going only 5 mph over a 20 mph limit.

More than 100 people got more than one ticket. A half dozen of those got three tickets each, with fines totaling $450 to $650.

Nope its not about the money, its about safety right?

Which of course is why they use them secret stakeouts instead of posting where they are in use.

The take in fines in that 19-day period: nearly half a million dollars.

That averages about $192 per fine.

Computer controlled cameras will be easier to beat than bs'ing a live cop.

We've got those things here in Raleigh and Cary NC. As far as I'm concerned there nothing more than legalized stealing machines. Just one more way the so called honest government can legal steal from its citizens.

What makes it even worse .... the company that runs them does so with the local governments authority. That's right, it's not even run by the local government, they allow an independent company to setup and issue the situations. The ticket is $50 but it doesn't go against your record. Although the profit split isn't discussed, the rumor is the local governments get about 50% of the take and yes "Take" is the right word

"It is a goddamned bad idea to outsource law enforcement functions."

Hmm Depending on how you look at it, I think it's a good idea. Maybe when enough people get pissed off they'll storm city hall and get these idiotic laws tossed.

Or maybe states/cities will start lowering taxes because of all the extra revenue coming in...hahahah okay I was pretty far fetched on the first scenario, but now I'm just talking crazy.

Yet if you or I were to post a sign with a number at the ends of our streets, set up cameras in front of our driveways, and mail large bills to people whose driving style we don't approve, ordering them to pay or else, what would it be called??? What's that word I'm thinking of? Oh yeah,

EXTORTION

These people need to get together and all contest their tickets, which is their right. I'm sure the court system or the prosecutorial system is not capable of handling that many contested cases.

Went home a few months back and my wife said, "there's a letter for you". I pointed out that it was her van, but to no avail. So much for that $60, I think. It was in DC, they love this scam, but at least you don't get points this way.

A freeper coined the best phrase for this.

He said that the police's mission statement has changed from "to serve and protect" to "to observe and collect"

Yes, there was a story in USA Today (which the commies at Gannett won't permit us to post) quoting some idiot lobbyist from the Governor's Association who advocated reduced speed limits on highways.

Hello??? We tried that and it cost us billions in lost time and productivity. People in Western states need to get where they are going before the cobwebs form. Do the Governor's even know this person is spouting this crap?

FYI, you are not allowed to post a sign indicating a red light camera is there. It is a crime in most places like Cincinnatti where a woman who used to put nickels in expired parking meters got cited for violating some law.

In the future you'll have a GPS device in your car that will have constant contact with a sattillite, that is programmed with every traffic law known to man in every location. So unless your able to drive like a machine, youll get tickets in the mail on a weekly basis.
