Most migrants had jobs in Mexico, survey finds

WASHINGTON - A new survey of migrant Mexicans shatters the myth they are largely unemployed farmworkers who struggle to pick up jobs on street corners.

Only 5 percent of the most recent migrants were unemployed before they crossed the border, and only an equal percentage remained unemployed within six months of crossing, the survey found.

Newer migrants were just as likely to have worked in construction zones and hotels than in the fields, the survey found.

The findings released today by the Pew Hispanic Center based on questionnaires in Spanish filled out by 4,836 persons in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Raleigh, N.C., and Fresno, Calif., between July 2004 and January 2005.

The report comes as the House of Representatives prepares to take up measures to toughen security on the Southwest border. Some involved in the immigration debate say the solution is to improve economic conditions in Mexico.

But the Pew report says that while underemployment might be a problem in Mexico in terms of low wages, unemployment is not driving workers to the United States.

"The vast majority of migrants were gainfully employed before they moved to the U.S.," the report says.

The Pew study did not delve into what draws the migrants to the United States but rather focused on their work before and after crossing the border.

Two in five migrants who have lived in the United States more than 15 years had a background in farming in Mexico, but that has dropped to one in five for migrants who have been in the United States less than two years.

Nearly as many of the recent immigrants have a background in manufacturing (19 percent).

More than 80 percent of the migrants have relatives other than a spouse or a child in the United States, and 45 percent say they find out about jobs from friends or relatives, according to the survey.

About 15 percent of new migrants have trouble finding a job but that changes rapidly after they are in the United States for six months, "unrelated to any improvements in education, fluency in English or change in authorization status," Pew says.

But the job picture is not perfect. About 38 percent of migrants reported a spell of unemployment lasting more than a month in the past year, regardless of how long they've been in the states or their legal status.

And about half the respondents said they earned less than $300 a week. That's especially true for women who speak no English and have no U.S. identification, Pew said.

Traitors and criminals who give them jobs.

Real lazy bums won't work here or there.

People who work come here for better jobs.

"Traitors and criminals who give them jobs."

Criminals, certainly. Traitors...not really. The word "traitor" is much misused, diluting its meaning seriously.

A traitor is one who commits treason. There is a precise definition of treason in our Constitution. People hiring illegal aliens do not meet it.

Let's save accusations of treason for real traitors. Those who hire illegal aliens are criminals, certainly, and I'd like to see them prosecuted, since that would quickly slow the traffic in illegals to a trickle.

No death sentences for those who employ illegals. That's the sentence for traitors.

Let's use that word properly.

It's not exactly rocket science. They come here to suck this country dry while sending the benefits back to their home turf.
Not without dropping a kid or two during their stay, however. Good insurance.

If only we could give them a good old fashioned flogging!

This is true and one of the other dirty little secrets associated with the illegals is that, in many cases, they are not coming because they necesssarily want to. If someone gets TB or Hep they are sent north. These stories that they saved for years to get the money for their "coyote" are hogwash. Mexico funds the criminal and sick to leave. As incentive, their families are threatened. The President's view on this, that these people are happy go lucky child-like "pancho's and Jose's" id ludicrous. Many are bad and many are very sick.

Undermining their fellow 'legal' taxpaying countrymen. I think the title traitor fits perfectly.

It should be made a felony for Criminals who overstay their legal visas and Invaders.

I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINALS or INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINALS or INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.
Those in government should be the first ones charged.
