Kids Find Hibernating Bear Under Porch
The Indy Channel ^ | December 6, 2005 | AP

EFFORT, Pa. -- A black bear has picked a bad spot for his long winter's nap.

A couple of kids in Monroe County, Pa., found the bear sleeping under their porch.

Pedro Sainvil said two of his children started screaming "Dad, Dad! There's a bear under the house!"

He has four kids and the home is near where 20 children wait for the school bus.

Wildlife officials estimate the snoozing bear could weigh as much as 700 pounds. State Game Commission officers said they will relocate the bear to a den on public land where it can sleep until spring.

Myself, personally, I think screaming around a bear - hibernating or not - is a bad idea.

Could be worse. Could be an 800 pound bear near where 18 children wait for the school bus.

They should have let it sleep. If the kids got out of line, the parents could just say "if you kids don't knock it off, I'm going to wake up the bear!"

So they shoot the bear with a traquilizer gun. Then the short straw gets to go under the porch to see if the bear is knocked out.

OK....

But it seems to me that there is very little difference between a 699 pound bear, a 701 pound bear, and the reported 700 pound bear....

And a 700 pound bear that ingested two 50 pound kiddies is just a simple addition, which my antique slide rule won't do... Now an abbacus on the other hand... ;-)

You're not considering all the factors. Not only the weight of the bear, but also the number of children, their ages, and their distance from the bear. I count three degrees of freedom!
