Left-Wing Movie Review: 'Narnia represents everything that is most hateful about religion'
The Guardian ^ | 12/6/05 | Polly Toynbee

Posted on 12/06/2005 8:42:59 AM PST by dukeman

Children won't get the Christian subtext, but unbelievers should keep a sickbag handy during Disney's new epic, writes Polly Toynbee

......

Of all the elements of Christianity, the most repugnant is the notion of the Christ who took our sins upon himself and sacrificed his body in agony to save our souls. Did we ask him to? Poor child Edmund, to blame for everything, must bear the full weight of a guilt only Christians know how to inflict, with a twisted knife to the heart.

Good to see that the English language edition of "The Peoples Daily" has chimed in.

This from the same folks who, in response to filth on TV and radio, say to just turn the channel.

The only thing that disgusts her about Christianity is its central tenet.

Obviously, she’s the perfect person to review a movie with an underlying Christian subtext. Much like asking a skinhead to review “The Color Purple.”

Repugnant?

A man has no greater love than to lay down his life for another.

Maybe Dr. Savage is right and liberalism IS a mental illness.

Same article (but different title) here, with more commentary.

Consensus is that Polly is crackers. What a hateful woman.

She calls it "disgusting." I call it "amazing", as in Amazing Grace.

I'm still trying to figure out how sacrifice out of love is repugnant.

The only answer I can come up with is that if someone really did this for you it might make you feel as if you owed something to that person, maybe even feel obligated to try to become a better person yourself. And I guess she just hates that idea.

I don't know about anyone else, but I just roared (no pun intended) with laughter when I read this. I don't think I can imagine a more infantile response to the Atonement.

Laura Ingraham said yesterday that she saw it over the week end, and it's incredible. She loved it.

Hey lady, your free to reject Jesus' saving power. And while your at it, feel free to thank God for giving you free will...

What would she say about a movie that presented a positive view of Islam? Really, all this Christian bashing is getting tiresome.

Once you fathom that sacrifice and take a good, honest look at yourself, you either become more humble or more prideful. I wonder which path this woman is taking?

Agreed. Anger in response to the greatest gift anyone could receive is really hard to understand. But Christ did say He came to bring a sword, though, didn't He? He truly is the dividing line for humanity.
