At least 111 dead as aircraft crashes into Tehran buildings

TEHRAN - An Iranian military transport plane crashed into a 10-story apartment building in the suburbs of the capital Tehran on Tuesday, killing at least 111 people, according to state media and the city's mayor.
All 94 passengers and crew of the plane were killed, the mayor of Tehran said. Tehran state radio said that of the building's residents, 25 people were killed and 15 were injured.
The ISNA students' news agency said the aircraft burst into flames and that the fire was hampering rescue work.

The plane crashed while trying to make an emergency landing at Tehran's main international Mehrabad airport.
"It is awful down here. I am suffocating," Red Crescent official Shahram Alamdari told Reuters by telephone from the scene, before hanging up.

Military Plane Crashes In Iran
(CBS) TEHRAN, Iran An Iranian military transport plane with 94 people on board crashed into a 10-story building in the suburbs of the capital Tehran on Tuesday, state television reported.
"The building is on fire now," the television said, adding that fire-fighters were trying to save people trapped inside the building in the Azari residential district.
The C-130 aircraft hit the building while coming in to land at Tehran's Mehrabad airport for an emergency landing, reports said.
The plane, which belonged to the Army's air force, was carrying 84 passengers and 10 crew, the television reported. Tehran's mayor said all aboard were killed.
It crashed due to a technical failure as it was trying to make an emergency landing, the television said.
The plane crashed into the Towhid residential complex.
It had taken off from Mehrabad airport and was heading to Bandar Abbas, a port city in southern Iran.
