The San Diego Wall: The Joke's On You
A Civilian With A Camera | Dec. 5, 2005 | Travis McGee

Posted on 12/05/2005 12:53:26 PM PST by Travis McGee

Recently, there has been discussion by some Congressmen about extending a fence or a wall across the southern border. Occasionally, one hears the example of "The San Diego Wall" being held up as a great success story.

This is a lie. The "San Diego Wall" is a gigantic hoax.

A few weeks ago a friend took a camera to the border in eastern San Diego County, here is his report:

Boulevard, CA. November, 2005.

"Morning shift change comes at about 7:30 am on the US/Mexico border. With photographer (name withheld) and his security escort on board, we head towards the rusted wire agriculture fence that separates private property from the government road that runs along the border. This morning our goal is to observe and photograph some of the people who enter the country illegally from Mexico using professional smugglers to guide them across. We don't have to wait long before our subjects arrive. Walking cautiously northbound towards our location they finally spot us. In the chaos of dropped backpacks and water bottles our photographer manages to get several pictures at close range.

"This was a small group of only seven. Their shoes were wrapped with thick Mexican blankets to help mask their footprints from being detected by Border Patrol agents who are experts at tracking people. As they all ducked back through the agricultural fence and over the steel, four foot high border wall I could hear the usual shouts of a group that has been discovered while crossing. "Correle!" "Rapido!" - Run! Quickly!

"Then came the first of many rocks that frustrated illegal aliens often throw if they are impeded. They were landing just beyond the security escort and photographer, easily clearing the fence and 60' wide government road. There is some calm, practiced conversation between the security escort and photographer . Escort - "Rocks, move to cover." Photographer - "Moving." We retreat 20 yards north and make contact with the Border Patrol to alert them of the danger that this specific group poses.

"This is a daily occurrence along the border in San Diego's east county. Usually, there is no one present to observe the actual crossing. All that is typically left are some faint footprints and discarded items no longer needed to complete their journey. But when confronted, many groups of would be crossers display immediate and dangerous tendencies towards violence. The supervisory agent who takes our report over the phone does not seem surprised by our account. A lone agent is dispatched to monitor the group and prevent them from crossing again, at least for today."

Here are some of the pictures.

Here are the two civilian volunteer border watchers.

This is the kind of thick brush on both sides of the border. After running less than 60 feet across the "government road" on the U.S. side, the illegals are invisible, and on their way. Interstate 8 is a few miles north.

Here is a long shot of the border, showing the "Dreaded San Diego Wall," which runs from here to the ocean. Illegals can take a cheap taxi ride from Tecate to within a short walk of the wall, and cross it at their liesure, day or night. Lookouts with cell phones wait for the USBP vehicles to drive over a distant hill, and then they know with great certainty that "the coast is clear" for the next hour or two. (Unless some civilian border watchers happen to be waiting nearby, to ruin their easy hike into the USA, if only for the moment.)

After this little group of seven was spotted by a civilian volunteer patrol, they scrambled back across the government road to the "Mighty San Diego Wall." Note their extreme difficulty in crossing over it. Note the actual four foot height of the fence at the corner where most are crossing.

Note how the U.S. government very thoughtfully placed the rusty steel runway matting with its corrogations aligned horizontally, to provide a convenient toe-hold for climbers. See the female, as she climbs the Fearsome Wall Of Doom. She is so worried (not!) about the Border Patrol spotting her, that she is wearing a brilliant white sweatshirt. Obviously, she "ain't sweating it."

There she goes! Right over the Fearsome San Diego Wall! My ten year old daughter could do it with ease.

"Hey Gringo! Your little rusty wall is a great big joke! Your politicians are even bigger jokes! We'll be back in a few hours, Gringo! Meantime, here are some rocks to remember us by!"

So when you hear our leaders touting the "Amazing San Diego Wall" as an example to be copied across the entire border, know well that they are lying, or they are idiots.

In fact, the rusty runway matting wall actually HELPS the smugglers, by shielding their movements from the eyes of the USBP. They can move illegals in large numbers, right on the other side of the wall, completely hidden from view. (Or they can move large quantities of dope, of course.)

Then, when lookouts report that the white Border Patrol SUV has crested the distant hill, "the game is on," and over the wall they come.

Once over the wall, they scurry through the brush to waiting "clown houses," a mile or two inside the border, where they hide out until it is time to be picked up by trucks and vans, and driven to San Diego or LA. (The "clown houses" and "illegal alien motels" are so open about their trade, that it's a joke. But the media is not interested in this story.)

Now, there is a USBP checkpoint on I-8 in Campo, but there's a catch: it is only manned HALF OF THE TIME.

So, here is how the game is continued. Lookouts keep and eye on the Campo USBP checkpoint, and when the Border Patrol agents close up shop and go home, they make their cell calls, and "the game is on." The illegal aliens waiting in the "clown houses" are picked up, and driven straight to San Diego or LA, where they know they cannot be touched, even if they wear a hat or shirt which states, "I AM AN ILLEGAL ALIEN!"

So as you can clearly see, boys and girls, our so-called border security is just a big joke, and the joke is on YOU. The "Dreaded San Diego Wall" is the best example of how to defend the border? HAHAHAHA! I am falling down laughing, tears running down my face! And some of you actually BELIEVE our leaders, when they say they want to defend our border! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Now, what WOULD work? Why, it's really quite simple. Ask the Israelis, they KNOW what works. A simple and cheap (but highly effective) multiple fence system, with a plowed tracking strip and sensors. Such a fence would permit the USBP to observe the smugglers moving around on the other side, instead of shielding them from view like the Awesome San Diego Wall.

With such a multiple fence system, the USBP could actually spend their time guarding something defensible, instead of spending their days hopelessly chasing illegals around 100,000 square miles of wide open border land.

But--and listen carefully--such a fence will never be built.

And why not? Here is why: Because it would work.

And our leaders' dirty little secret is this: they want the border open. Wide open.

That's why they will tap dance back and forth about drones, a "smart border," sensors etc....but will refuse to actually build a modern multiple fence system.

Because...it would work.

That's not a wall. It looks more like a guardrail to keep someone from crossing the border unintentionally. It is far too easy to climb and far too short. Heck, just approaching the wall should have moved agents to action if it was a "smart" wall. Double barriers must be in place to if your desire to security and not just an empty gesture.

It's a big game. The illegals wait until the USBP has driven far off over the hill to cross the wall, with about zero % chance of capture.

Then they wait a mile away at a "clown house" for the word that the USBP check point at Campo has closed for the night. (I swear, I am not making this up!) Their rides come, and off they go to San Diego or LA.

A Border Patrol Agent told me that unofficially, some of them snuck back to the checkpoint at Campo a few times, after it was officially closed.

They found a much higher number of trucks and vans passing right through, way down on their axles with their loads.

When their supervisors were informed, instead of being rewarded, they were reprimaned, and told to never do such stunts again.

(The supervisors are political hacks, who are in on the charade.)

Why propose something which has ZERO chance of ever being seriously considered? There is no need for such a massive concrete wall. Even the Israelis have only built a few miles of it, where they are right next to Palestinian villages, that is, within firearms or RPG range. Even in Israel, 95% of their border is fenced. It's cheaper, and more effective in that it is transparent.

Totally agree. Fences are much cheaper and actually provide better security. A huge concrete wall will deteriorate over time against the elements such as dry heat. A barbed-wire fence will do the job at a fraction of the cost.

I need an estimate of the hi-tech Spanish wall. How much does it cost to build and maintain?

I bet we spend more money in this country to keep animals from wandering onto the highways and to keep snow drifts from forming on highways than we do to keep illegal aliens from "wandering" across our borders. Drive across Wyoming and see the tall fence to keep the herds from crossing I-80. Drive across Colorado or Michigan and see the rows of 40' tall structures to stop snow drifts. But we cannot build even a modest structure to at least slow down illegal immigrants. I'm sorry, I don't want to offend, I meant "undocumented americans." (puke here).

I would bet the government could start a fund raiser and get enough contributions to pay for the "structure" to be built. I think my taxes have already paid for it, but what is it going to take.

I hope a democrat does not decide to run for president on a platform of border security that entails a real barrier. He would probably take just enough of our votes to win.

Laying the runway matting horizontally is absolutely retarded. Might as well build a wall featuring regularly spaced ladders on both sides. And if the wall is only 4 feet tall, you might as well not even have a wall. Combine the two and you either have gross incompetence of intentional degradation of security. Naco, Arizona (near my home) uses walls made of surplus runway matting among other things. They were at least smart enough to install the wall vertically.

But the wall only goes so far, and then you have simple, low vehicle barrier that is easy to climb over:

But in some sections, the wall was installed horizontally too:

Which gives way, eventually, to a lower wall:

Which then gives way to a weak fence:

Or no wall or fence at all, just some rocks:

Here's a better photo of how that wall ends in Naco. This one doesn't have all the open borders insurgents climbing all over the place:

And we are supposed to take El Presidente Arbusto seriously, when he says he wants to increase security at the border, (while selling his guest worker amnesty plan.)

When their supervisors were informed, instead of being rewarded, they were reprimaned, and told to never do such stunts again.

This is a common story from those charged with protecting our borders. Management will put them out to "guard an X" and if they stray from that point or even happen to observe illegals behind them or at a long distance that is not near the X, and then they go and apprehend the border invaders, they'll spend the next day "cutting paper". That is, they will have to file a lengthy report detailing why they had the audacity to move from the X and they they get reprimanded for doing it.

Agents who really want to do their jobs and stop border invaders end up getting in trouble.

No. Anyone with a lick of sense knows that the President was just telling conservatives in his party what he thinks they wanted to hear to quiet them long enough for him to shove his guest invader scamnesty down our throats.

You know our military uses rolled razor wire that is about 4' to 5' feet tall in double rows and/or intertwined to secure perimters. It is not inpenetrable but very cost effective and at least a deterent. I am not saying it is the answer but it would demonstrate at least some token effort.
