They are looking to opposition to illegal immigration as a way to edge out Democrats in 2006, and not just in border statesIf the GOP thinks what they are doing on illegal immigration will edge out Dems they don't have a clue.

No mention of Howard Kaloogian? I'm pretty sure he's running and should at least be mentioned.

-"Gilchrist does not tiptoe around the issue...He would put tens of thousands of military troops on patrol along the 2,000-mile southern border... This should have been done (not 'yesterday') but 4 YEARS AGO!!!!

The race is for the seat of veteran incumbent Chris Cox, who was appointed by Bush to head the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Campbell gets close to 70%. This is one of the safest GOP seats in the nation.
To: matymac

"I think the right policy and right politics are for Republicans to embrace the more optimistic, welcoming conservatism of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush." ...and with respect to immigration, that has gotten us where??

Howard Dean, head of the Democratic National Committee, blasted Bush's immigration plan, accusing him of "scapegoating" the border crossers. But even among GOP faithful there is dissent. Howard Dean, head of the Democratic National Committee, blasted Bush's support for capital punishment, accusing him of "scapegoating" murderers.
Howard Dean, head of the Democratic National Committee, blasted Bush's war on terror, accusing him of "scapegoating" terrorists and the countries who harbor and support them.
Howard Dean is a moron.

If the GOP thinks what they are doing on illegal immigration will edge out Dems they don't have a clue. There are plenty of GOP incumbents with horrible records on illegal immigration. I've got a score that I plan to settle with a couple of Republican Senators from Wyoming on this issue at each and every future voting opportunity and they are not even among the worst of the GOP. I don't picture the illegal immigration issue being very helpful to the majority of Republicans who are open borders tools of the Chamber of Commerce.
But it may help anybody who can legitimately claim membership in Tancredo's caucus. It might also help new candidates if they take the "Tancredo Pledge".

Yes, and sadly the Cato Institute, a generally useful Libertarian think tank is way out to lunch on this.

"Campbell learned a lesson ... that immigration is a very salient issue in this district, and it is important to talk about fairly rigorous enforcement," The lesson is it's only important to talk about the issue. sarcasm

Use it as a wedge issue, then once the election is over, forget it. That appears to be the plan on both sides.

Who is the retired Congressman that they are replacing? It's Christopher Cox, who didn't retire, but was appointed by President Bush to be head of the SEC, if memory serves.
