Webber fact-checks Chomsky
powerlineblog ^ | 04 December 2005 | Scott at PowerlineBlog

Mitch Webber is a third-year student at Harvard Law School and a research assistant for Alan Dershowitz. Mitch heard that the Harvard Crimson was working on an editorial about the Dershowitz-Chomsky debate that will be broadcast on C-SPAN tonight and wrote the paper's editors. Mitch's (slightly revised) message to the Crimson was as follows:

Considering The Crimson's current anti-Dershowitz slant and general disregard for facts in stories concerning Dershowitz, I thought I should offer my assistance.

Has any of that been published in 'The Crimson'? I suppose there'd possibly be riots in Cambridge if that many shibboleths were punctured at one go, but the people up there really ought to have the chance to at least read something reasonable once in a while.

Of course, those up there who are sensible already read NRO and possibly PowerLineBlog. But that would be a small minority, I'm guessing.

"6. Chomsky claimed that he had not, only a moment earlier, claimed that Cuba has a better human rights record that Israel. (Dershowitz challenged Chomsky to name a single country, facing similar external or terrorist threats, that maintained greater devotion to the rule of law and human rights. Chomsky named Nicaragua and Cuba.)"

Says it all right there about Chomsky and his love of communism. Anyone who blindly follows this man because it is the "in" thing to do (DUmmies) really should investigate his facts closer.

I haven't checked The Crimson lately due to my particular aversion of left-wing Goebbels-speak. I suppose that I should though in the interest of being thorough. Love NRO.

Good post on one of the few issues where I think Dershowitz has it right. Chomsky continues to be the linguist who never lets a fact or reality get in the way of a diatribe. He is a great practitioner of the "great lie" method of debate, which depends upon the relative ignorance of his supporters and the left's prediliction to endow their "heroes" with superhuman qualities and ignore their essential immorality: Lenin, Mao, Castro and Stalin were murderous thugs.

"Facts are like kryptonite to liberals."

True... but the MSM isn't holding them accountable. When lies are consistently repeated by enough people... and not denounced... they become FACTS.

Only to those sheep who simply follow the leader. This is exaclty why the "Alternative Media" has erupted.

Back in Sept, for the Weekly Standard's 10th anniversary, the JFK school of govt's Institute of Politics had a forum containing William Kristol, PJ O'Rourke, and Fred Barnes among others. A decent sized crowd showed up, was civil, and asked some excellent questions.

Dershowitz vehemently urged viewers to research Chomsky's assertions. He is apparently confident that truth, as usual, is the bane of liberals.

I only caught part of the debate, but even in a crowd as hostile as that at the JFK School of Government in Red Square, Dershowitz held his own. He got strident at times (and his voice could cause a hyena to cringe), but he managed to make his points earnestly and cogently, while Commski soft-sold the usual platitudes about Evil America.

And Dershowitz mopped the floor with him in the summations.

The crowd can indeed vary wildly, depending on who is speaking. The Weekly Standard event probably drew few 'typical Cantabridgians.'

Every state in the US is actually more or less purple, though some tend to the blue side and most to the red. Still, that means that in eastern Massachusetts, as in SF, there will be great patriotic Americans and there will even be some red-staters with a familiarity with common civility.

I'm sorry if my flip comment suggested otherwise, because I do recall the respectful reception given many good conservative thinkers out in the West (when I was still living there).

I saw that, too. Why was PJ slouching the whole time? Talk about bad posture.

I agree. Too often people think of the red/blue map as if it was 100%/0%, but it really is all purple - most of which is in a narrow band hovering around 50%. My 'hood though, is an exception. In 2000, Nader got more votes than Bush.

Didn't take offense at your comment. I've seen quite a few less than respectful street protests here also.
