according to one of her teenage daughters, it may be the family dog - which has since been destroyed - that deserves the thanks. "She had taken pills, she was unconscious," the daughter said of the incident that led to her mother's injuries six months ago.
"When the dog realised that it tried to wake her. After that we don't know what happened with the dog, whether it bit or clawed her, but it managed to pull her awake," she said. "In a way, it was lucky for her that the dog was there."
Leading transplant surgeon Jean-Michael Dubernard dismissed suggestions that the pills episode had been a suicide attempt.

I have some pictures of my pit. I'm not going to add them to pit bull bashing threads though. I am special and made an ALF message boards. They are in town too whining about the bears. I don't want to broadcast what my girl looks like. She is unique and recognizable.
See my previous post; the daughter is a teenager, and that article doesn't state anything about her being home or calling the emergency....sounds strange, too, as the daughter said she "we don't know what happened with the dog, whether it bit or clawed her, but it managed to pull her awake".... Sounds like nobody was in the house with the mother.
Reminds me of Roy, of Sigfried and Roy, being "rescued" by his giant cat.
I have Ibizan Hounds.
They're just about the 'least likely to attack' dogs on earth.
[unless you're a bunny or deer]..;)
Back in '93, my woodstove had some kind of weird downdraft problem while I was asleep and smoke filled the house completely.
I have no sense of smell and was sleeping on the only ear I can hear out of.
My best girl Ibizan apparently clawed at me for a long while, trying to wake me up.
I'm assuming I was already succumbing to smoke inhalation because scratches hard enough to leave marks didn't budge me.
When that failed, she began to jump up and down on my stomach with her front legs.
[this is "typical" Ibizan behavior; they sometimes "stomp" their prey after they've caught it]
That worked and I awoke to a house so smokey I could only hear the other dogs making coughing noises on their sofa a mere 10 feet away.
If she hadn't 'brutalized' me like she did, I and my other dogs would've died.
We all sat huddled together for warmth with all the doors and windows open on one of the coldest nights ever recorded according to local weather records but we lived.
That wonderful old dog is gone but her nieces and nephew are with me.
Phoebe [the evil little hellion runt] would have no reservations whatsoever about chewing me awake if she had to.
She nibbles me mercilessly just for kicks anyway...;]
The dog has become the red herring to take away from the questions as to why she was attacked, why was the transplant done and what does the daughter know.
I will defend your right to say what you will, but that doesn't mean I agree. Stewardship is just fine, but it does not account for, nor can it always control the innate nature of the animal.
"Sounds like nobody was in the house with the mother."
Left due to the fight and came back after Mom had a little cooling off time? Sounds plausible to me; I had a good friend in my teen years whose father had alcohol problems, and would sometimes pick fights and even get violent. They'd leave the house and come back in a few hours, fairly confident that he would be passed out.
But it was mentioned.
Still fishy.
I live in Germany and sent my baby back to the US in Nov 04 for her own safety. In the summer of 05 I received two complaints from people in the neighborhood that said my dog tried to attack them.. The Polizei came to investigate and ended up fining the people for false reports. I am so glad my my dog is safe. I know what you mean.
Very strange, and all speculation, of course, as it seems the doctors are trying to squelch any suicidal attempts, and are merely stating there was a family argument; no article has mentioned whether or not the teen daughter lives with the mother (who is divorced and, btw, has gotten a new dog). http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=2343652005
So...how about giving an IQ test to every potential pitbull owner? /sarc off
You have my sympathies. I've been reading all the dangerous breed acts that have hit Germany. I know that is the slippery slope we are heading to with the pit bull as the publicity dog.
I don't think the dog "chewed" - but clawed - trying to rouse her.
Dogs do not know the power they have in their bite or "pawing" even when trained - they just do it. They have awesome power - check your drywall or moulding or antique furniture leg with a teething puppy - or in my case my BMWs steering wheel, dashbord, seats and seatbelt brackets - Shame on me for that - and yes he is still alive.
1500 lbs per sq inch with the back of the jaw - rivals a shark.
One observation: various articles refer to the dog "the family dog".
Would that be said of a woman who keeps a dog and who lives alone? I would assume, if she lived alone, the article would say "her dog."
I don't recall now where I read it, but several articles now say that it was a rumor. Yet noone really seems to know what happened.
"According to Dr. Dubernard, the woman had quarreled with her daughter that evening in May and the daughter had left to spend the night at her grandmother's home. The woman was agitated, he said, and took "one pill" to help herself sleep. At some point during the night, he said, she arose and stumbled through the house, encountering the dog.
Local press reports have suggested that the woman fell unconscious and that the dog chewed and clawed her face in an attempt to revive her, but Dr. Dubernard said the dog had been adopted from the local pound and was known to be aggressive." http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/02/health/02cnd-face.html?8bl
"Up until recently, the recipient was reportedly the victim of a dog attack. However news is circulating now that the damage was caused after the recipient attempted suicide by taking a pill overdose, and the dog - described in various reports as either a a labrador or rottweiler - caused her injuries while trying to awaken her. One news outlet credited the woman's 17 year old daughter as the source for this suicide scenario, however so far the hospital is denying the reports."

>>>>and, btw, has gotten a new dog
Ah yes, the appeaser. Try to make like nothing happened.
New face, new dog, incident never happened.
I have Ibizan Hounds.
Point well taken
