East Coast Snow Early in the Week
Accuweather.com ^ | December 4th, 2005

Posted on 12/04/2005 11:45:47 AM PST by Termite_Commander

Wintry weather will take another swipe at the Eastern Seaboard early next week, and it may do so in a big way.

Monday, low pressure along a sharp cold front will ripple northeast from Louisiana, reaching Georgia and South Carolina late in the day, then waters off New England Tuesday.

As its rain spreads northeastward, they will encounter air cold enough for snow beginning along the southern Appalachian Highlands. The leading edge of snow will reach the mid-Atlantic states Monday before spreading throughout the northern Atlantic Seaboard Monday night and Tuesday.

Details of how far north and west the storm's substantial moisture will reach are not yet settled. If much of the storm's potential is realized, a band of 3 to 6 inches of snow will be laid down in a corridor linking the major East Coast cities.

Visit with us at AccuWeather.com Headlines, as we will be updating on this storm as its path and intensity take on better clarity.

Major Eastern Winter Storm on the Way

From AccuWeather...

The first big snowstorm of the season will cause major travel problems along Interstate 81 from Tennessee through Virginia and Interstate 95 from Richmond, Virginia, on north. Snow will reach Washington, D.C., around lunchtime Monday then the New York City area during the evening. Parts of Virginia could get over a foot of snow from this storm.

From The Weather Channel...

A storm center swirling northeastward along a stalled front in the Southeast tomorrow will spread accumulating snow into portions of Virginia. Even at this short range, however, details of the storm are maddeningly difficult to define. The best bet for several inches of snow would appear to western and northern Virginia--including the Washington-Baltimore area--but central Virginia can’t be ruled out. Snowfall could also reach westward into West Virginia and, by evening, as far north as southern Pennsylvania and New Jersey... but nothing is certain. Elsewhere, a few flurries are likely near the Great Lakes and in northern New England. Temperatures will run below average for early December with highs generally in the 20s and 30s (40s in Tidewater Virginia).

Might be a good time to get that snowblower primed. This might be a decent snow event for those in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Lucky you. Meanwhile, I'm dead-center in the storm's path.

Karl, will you turn that darn machine off? You're going to kill the batteries.

The first snow seldom amounts to much. Mostly hyped. Still any snow that hits DC around noon will screw up traffic something horrible.

Went through (st. paul, mn) here yesterday, leaving about 4" of light fluffy stuff. I didn't even fire up the snowblower...just used my 36" pusher shovel to clear the driveway. No big deal, although it did get down to 2 degrees above last night.

I am about an hour and twenty NW of NYC and I have two inches on the ground right now. Tuesday should just add more joy. /sarcasm

I'll be happy to turn the machine off, as soon as Karl calls me. He had it installed in my garage year before last, and he hasn't paid the agreed upon monthly fee in about six months.

Not much snow here in Fairbanks--typical for a subarctic desert--but it is 30 below. It has been zero and below so long even the little taiga creatures have forgotten what summer is like.

You're right about that, but you can never be too careful. Best to be prepared.

If you go out and buy some salt now and nothing happens, then you have salt for next time, right?

Just shovelled 2" of the white stuff this morning......not enough for the snowblower.

Did use it on 3"+ Thanksgiving Day.

That's 5" so far.

Gotta love this global warming.
