Working in the Shadows
The Washington Times, AP Story ^ | 12/4/2005 | Angie Wagner

LAS VEGAS -- Israel Gonzalez rises before dawn each morning and heads to the sidewalks around the city's plant nurseries to wait for a job. There, alongside other men, he watches for pickup trucks that slow down, hoping today he will be chosen for work.

It's a morning ritual played out regularly in cities and towns across the United States as day laborers, mostly illegal aliens, scramble for work in a country that accepts their labor while disavowing their right to be here.

The work is steady, the money is good, and when Mr. Gonzalez gets picked up for a job, no one asks for documents or identification.

"The bosses don't care if the papers are real or not," he says, sporting a hat with an American flag on it...

... Illegal aliens hold about 12 million to 15 million jobs in the United States, or about 8 percent, Mr. Justich estimates. That may seem a small percentage, but it helps keep wages for unskilled jobs low. And many of the jobs are off the books, meaning the government loses about $35 billion a year in income tax collections, he says....

I think we have twice that number of illegals, just in the DC/Baltimore Metro area.

I guess Marine helicopters, and jumbo jets keep Mr. Bush from seeing them...

If I had my way they would all be working in the southern shadow of a new 25' high US border security fence.

I think a few well-placed photo ads in the local newsrags would get some attention. It works against the "johns" in the prostitution bizness...

I wonder how the author can justify the actions of a VERY small minority (0.001%, my guess) of the people who hire illegals is somehow representative of how the country feels about this. Yes, there are people who hire illegals, and don't care. There are also people who abuse their wives, drive drunk, abuse children, steal, embezzel, set fires, sell drugs; yet the author wouldn't think to call these actions representative of how the country acts.

A VAST majority want illegals out of this country. It's not a rascist thing, if Canadians were flowing over the border; we'd be demanding the exact same thing. Control the borders.

Not to nitpick, but the shadow of said wall would always be on the North side. I agree with your sentiment however.
