Mass. Justice Sorry for 'Red State' Remark

By DENISE LAVOIE, Associated Press Writer 38 minutes ago

Massachusetts' chief justice has apologized for a remark she made about "red states" during a commencement speech last spring after a citizen complaint was filed with the state's Commission on Judicial Conduct.

In greeting the audience at the Brandeis University commencement last May, Chief Justice Margaret Marshall commented on the hundreds of blue and white balloons held in nets tied to the rafters.

"No red states here," Marshall told the crowd, using a term used to describe Republican-leaning states.

In her apology Friday, the chief justice said she regretted making the comment.

Marshall said it was "an unconsidered, spontaneous attempt to connect with the exuberant celebratory feeling in the audience, reflecting the balloons I had seen."

"The reference to 'red states' was not part of my written, prepared speech. I regret the comment, and I apologize for it," she said. "I did not intend to say anything of a political nature."

Marshall's attorney, Hugh Scott, emphasized that the commission did not bring any charges against Marshall.

"After the complaint was received by the commission, there was a series of mutual discussions between the commission and the chief justice, and she concurred with the commission that this was an appropriate way to resolve the matter," Scott said.

Jill Pearson, executive director of the commission, declined to comment.

"Massachusetts' chief justice"

Of course, if some state's chief justice had made a similar remark about blue states, you know that at the very least the article would have begun the article by referring to him as the state's "conservative chief justice". Liberals, even far-leftists like Marshall, don't need to be pointed out.

This was the funny part of the article, which referred to Marshall having been called an activist judge after she authored the homosexual marriage opinion:

In her apology, Marshall addressed that criticism, as well, saying: "I hold sacred my oath to decide every case fairly and impartially and according to law."

Yeah, right, even if she has to make it up as she goes along.

I'm still miffed that the MSM made Lib states "blue" instead of "red" to avoid obvious commie connotations.

Excellent point. In countries around the world (including communist countries) the leftist/Communist parties use symbolic red.

Just another relatively small, but noteworthy way in which the Rathers, the Chronkites and the Jennings of this country have manipulated public opinion.

Wonder if a Republican would feel he will get a fair hearing in her court. She should be impeached.

No, but your true colors came shining through. What better indicator that a spontaneous remark as to your political leaning. Will we find donations to moveon.org as well? I see a lot of recusals in your future, madam chief "justice."

Yep, the media couldn't allow the commie states to be labeled "red" after all. And people here doubt their influence. Now WE even call them that.
