Saddam Surat #2 - Saddam Was Within 3 Months of A-Bomb Before Gulf War I

Saddam Surat # 2 - Saddam Was Within Three Months of A-Bomb in 1991. "The defection of Saddam's two sons-in-law in August 1995 was potentially the most damaging blow he had suffered since seizing power in 1979. For the first time two members of the Tikriti ruling circle had escaped Saddam's authority and were threatening to betray the regime's innermost secrets. Hussein Kamel, as head of Iraq's weapons procurement program, was particularly well equipped to provide Western intelligence with a treasure trove of detail about Saddam's weapons of mass destruction program. Hussen Kamel was full debriefed by both CIA and Britain's M16, and then by Rolf Ekeus, the head of UNSCOM. He provided a detailed account of Iraq's weapons program, including hitherto hidden chemical weapons plants and front companies helping with Iraq's weapons procurement and Saddam's VX nerve agent program. His most startling revelation was taht Saddam had been within three months of testing an atomic bomb at the start of Operation Desert Storm in January 1991." (excerpted from page 299 - Saddam: His Rise and Fall by Con Coughlin).

Are these the blokes who stupidly returned to Iraq under the guise that Saddam had forgiven them?

Last I heard, they were dining with the worms...in pieces.

We can't rely on all military tyrants making the elementary mistake of starting their war before they have their big weapon. Saddam made this mistake. Iran may not.

If they were this close in 1991, then I'm sure they kept their information and with some preparation could have duplicated the efforts and completed their project.

Yeah Dems, our efforts in Iraq are wasted. Geez Louise...

I welcome that point being made as often as possible. We simply cannot procrastinate on that subject.

E#xactly what the Bush admionistration was worried about...and the Dems agreed until it became politically expedient to change the facts.

While Iran would not have a prayer of winning a nuke war, the devastation would be immense and the whole possibility should be avoided if at all possible.

Agreed! Imagine selling out your natioin with regard to an operation like the WOT, just for political gain.

The democrats have destroyed what was left of their credibility.

What if they only had one operational weapon?

The downside is that it could be used as a 'roadside bomb' that would jeopardize thousands of our troops, not to mention Iranian citizens. I this something the U.N. and for that matter the E.U. are willing to let happen?

It's looking more and more like it.

I think our own leaders need to step up to the plate on the issue as well. I realize I don't have access to the intel they do, so perhaps this is unfair, but Israel seems convinced that Iran is close. If they are, I'm going to have to agree with them.

It's not about 'winning', so much as it is about taking your country off the opponents target list. You make youself invulnerable to conventional attack, basically. At least that has always been the thinking. Who knows, for instance, if the US might not attempt to preempt the crazies in Pyongyang?

It's almost like they sold their souls, isn't it?

Yes, they will. Never forget Blixie and North Korea's weapons program. Yeah, the UN sure put a stop to THAT alright.
