New design to Original Design

From the Flight 93 Memorial Newsletter for November 2005, describing the redesign on the Flight 93 Memorail Site:
When talking about the tower of voices, it says:
A tower of voices heroically marks the entry to and exit from the memorial site at Route 30. Tall enough to be seen from the highway, set on a planted mound within rings of White Pine trees, the tower houses forty white wind chimes. The sounds of chimes in the wind are a living memory of the forty persons who are honored; many of whose last contact was through their voices.When talking about the circular grove of trees, now called, "40 Memorial Groves", it says:
The memorial design commemorates the collective act of courage by the 40 passengers and crew of Flight 93 through 40 groves of Red and Sugar Maple trees in a shared, curving embrace of the Bowl's open spaces as it descends to the Sacred Ground. This feature, once called the Crescent of Embrace, is now referred to as the 40 Memorial Groves because with the addition of trees at the Bowls western edge, in the area of the Western Overlook, the Bowl shape is now expressed as a circle.When desscribing the new design, the newsletter states:
The Flight 93 National Memorial design described in this newsletter is an evolution of the design announced two months ago. Design refinements reflect public comment during and after the competition, conversations with the Partners, the competition Stage 2 jury comments, and issues related to the General Management PLan.I believe with this design, despite some of the continuing oppostion and interpretations on the web, that through the activism of millions of Americans around the country, we have successfully caused an alteration in the design from the original Red Crescent design, to something that is acceptable for me and mine. The Red Maples are much less pronounced and the arc does extend around to an almost complete circle, only ending at the crash site itself on each side. I believe this design will not be confused by future generations to be anything other than a tribute to those 40 passengers and crew who fought their terrorist hijackers and foiled their horrific plans on 911 and thuis achieved the first clear victory over Islamic terrorism on the very day they attacked our nation on our own soil.
The design has gone from something that, at least in my view, was far too obvious a similarity to an Islamic symbol, to something that someone would have to go to some extreme to try and relate to that symbol. Future generations will not do so...they will see it as a dedication to the actions and memory of the passengers and crew.
As I have said before, while I personally think that a better design could be made, this one is a much more complete circle that does not look like the Islamic crescent and is clearly memorializing the 40 passengers and crew and not the terrorists. It is something I can accept and would be willing to visit with my family...and we will do so.
Here is the mission stetement for this design from the newsletter and the web site:
"A common field one day. A field of honor forever. May all who visit this place remember the collective acts of courage and sacrifice of the passengers and crew, revere this hallowed ground as the final resting place of those heroes, and reflect on the power of individuals who choose to make a difference.May it be so.
In any case, we should all continue to monitor the situation so as to hold their feet to the fire as regards this design.
My feelings are that this design, while not exactly what I would have created, is acceptable now and for future generations. We will visit the site and I will pass on to my own what was contemplated and what everyday American all over this country did about it to make it something acceptable and fitting to those heroes.
FYI...a side by side comparison and my thoughts on the issue as it stands now.
Neither image shows the giant garbage dump near the site, nor any of the very heavy/large surface mining equipment nearby.
I believe any of those that are on the grounds of the memorial will be removed.

This started out as a tribute to islamic terrorism and has been slightly tweaked with some flowery language added. I say the whole design as well as the smart-@ssed, America-hating 'artist' should be scrapped. Start over from a new perspective. No crecent, no tower, not facing mecca, etc. How hard could that be?

Agreed. I feel that we have brought about change that in future generations will be for the good...and tat they will not relate the design in any way to the terrorists...irrespective of whatever intial intentions were, the design needed to change and now it looks like it will.
I agree, dump the designer all together. I see op point in allowing them to disguise the crescent so that some revisionist parts people can sneak the original design back in 20 years or so. The circle motive has no real attraction in American history, and does not belong there either. The whole thing is completely uninspiring, full of obscure elitist symbolism.
What's wrong with a simple Jefferson Memorial style building made of stone and brass Plaques that lasts for ages rather than a grove of trees that look barren in winter and are subject to bug infestations and fires.
This is not the exact design I would have picked, but I believe the change will not reflect in any way towards honoring, remembering or recognizing the terrorists. Furutre generations will not see this one (irrespective of what I may think would be better designs) in that light. but in a light of honoring the heroes who sacrificed themselves that day. That's good enough for me.

Nothing whatsoever is wrong with that and is the type of thing I would rather see.
But I did not get my back up over that part...it was over the clear image of an Islamic symbol on that soil. This one will not be seen that way, now or in the future. People will have to stretch to make it that way...and if that is the case, folks will stretch one way or the other no matter what you do.
I will visit this memorial and pay tribute to those heroes if it is built to what is now announced. I would not have ever visited the other.
Just my own feelings on the matter.

These changes, if they are true to them, while not the best or ideal design from my perspectiove, would be acceptable to me for the reasons I have documented in this thread.

IMHO, and that is all it is, it will take a real stretch for future generations to mistake this design for anything but a tribute to our heroes. Although it is not my ideal design, it will be acceptable to me and mine if they are true to it.
Just put a danged square with a fountain in it, and be done.
IMHO, the temporary memorial people put together soon after the crash was what they should have built on.
