Professor urges SGA to organize anti-war effort

The Student Government Association of the University of Massachusetts was challenged to organize an effort to stop the war in Iraq during last night?s Senate meeting.

Marvin Daehler, a member of the UMass Faculty Senate and Associate Chair of the Psychology department, informed the Senate of the war?s impact on students and made a plea to SGA members to organize a voice against the war.

According to Daehler, in President?s George Bush?s five years in office, America has accumulated a higher debt than any of the debts of previous president?s combined.

?This war impacts all of us, especially the college students. We have spent about $500 billion on the war,? said Daehler. ?Who?s going to pay for that? You are going to pay for it. Your children are going to pay for it. Your grandchildren are going to pay for it.?

Daehler contends that the American government has gone to great lengths to prevent a student upheaval similar to the one seen during the Vietnam War.

?Why is there no military draft? There?s no draft because the government learned their lesson with Vietnam,? said Daehler. ?If they hold a draft there will be students screaming ?Hell no, we won?t go?, and the government doesn?t want that.?

Daehler suggested that the Senate begin organizing immediately to ?end this war now,? combining with the efforts of other universities.

?It was a combined effort of students that stopped the Vietnam War. What began with one set of students continually grew as they reached out to other student form colleges throughout the country,? said Daehler. ?There is no reason a revolt couldn?t start now. There is no reason it couldn?t start at UMass. There is no restraint on this group from reaching out to other student governments to organize and come together to stop this war. It takes will, it takes determination, but there is no reason this couldn?t be done.?

The SGA Senate also voted during last night?s meeting to allocate $2,206.60 to Student Valley Productions.

Student Valley Productions is a combination of three different comedic groups: ?Mission Improvable?, ?IWA?, and ?Sketch 22?.

Speaker Sean Bliss expressed his displeasure with the productivity, or lack there of, of the SGA committees, his anger stemming from the fact that only one of the committees held their weekly meeting.

?I spoke at great lengths in the beginning of the semester about how the effectiveness of the Senate is only as effective as our committees themselves,? said Bliss. ?If we don?t take responsibilities seriously and make the most of them, I know a couple of guys in the Whitmore building who will. So, let?s do our jobs.?

The Senate also observed President Pavel Payano?s 20th birthday, singing ?Happy Birthday? as he entered the Cape Cod lounge in the Student Union.

The Ways and Means Committee of the student Senate will offer a budget workshop for treasurers of Registered Student Organizations. The workshop is scheduled for Dec. 5 at 5p.m. in room 168C of the Campus Center. The workshop plans to provide Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) with the necessary training to complete their yearly organization budget for the 2007 fiscal year.

According to Senator Jen Kennedy, in order to complete a budget for the 2007 fiscal year budget, an RSO representative must attend the budget workshop.

Old Marxists never die. They just remain to posion others. Professor Daehler avoided military service during Vietnam, turning an eleven year student deferrment into a career. He now serves as Associate Chair for the Psychology Department, specializing in child psychology.

At some point, we are going to have to stop this nonsense. It is through OUR tax dollars or donations that bums like this are allowed to sit on their @sses and cause trouble all day. The Left has taken over our school systems from top to bottom. Only through withholding donations to universities will they come to heel. There's not a d@mn thing that we can do about the tax dollars, though.

The SGA would be better off initiating efforts to remedy student stupidities in History, English, Science and a host of other subjects. Even some effort in spelling would be appreciated by people like me who have to read things written by this school's graduates!

Old sixties hippies trying desperately to cling to their rapidly fading youth.

The only rotten thing is this is an open minded, accepting, tolerant college professor that things every side should be heard (except Conservatives sitting in his class.)

This is a funny article -- it almost reads like a parody written by a Freeper. I don't know about other people, but if there's anyone whose opinion I care less about than the Amherst student government, I can't think who it would be.

This is merely the same game that Murtha played. He knew there were plans in the works to draw our troop strength in Iraq down. So he timed his press blitz to precede the announcement by a couple days, so he could claim that HE was the driving force behind the reduction. Nothing could be further from the truth, but with the LSM being complicit, he gets a pass on it.

Now comes this graying UMass Marxist, seeing that the 'insurgents' (read terrorists) are quickly running out of steam, and the Iraqis are about to stand up on their own two feet and give the quietus to these killers. So, when our victorious troops come home, he gets to say it was HIS efforts that 'stopped the war'. And the LSM will trumpet the 'fact' from the front page.

And then the LSM will wonder why no one reads their fishwrap anymore.
