THE Netherlands is setting up a commission to regulate the practice of ending the lives of "seriously suffering" newborn babies, the government said today, in a move critics said could allow more euthanasia.
Euthanasia of newborns and late abortions remain illegal, but the commission - composed of three doctors, a lawyer and an ethicist - is likely to recommend that doctors who follow certain rules are not charged in concrete cases. Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner and Junior Health Minister Clemence Ross-van Dorp said they hoped the commission, expected to start work in mid-2006, would improve the transparency of decision making.
"We wanted to respond to the needs of doctors to create clarity in how to deal with ending the life of seriously suffering newborns as well as the legal consequences of late abortions," the ministers wrote in a letter to parliament.
"The conventions, as well as the opinion of the commission, offer doctors the knowledge that cases will not just be seen from a legal perspective but also from a medical and ethical perspective ... the uncertainty of doctors is being addressed."
In 2001, the Netherlands became the first country to legalise adult euthanasia, a move condemned by the Roman Catholic Church, but has since been followed by Belgium, while other European states are investigating allowing it.
Bert Dorenbos, from anti-euthanasia group Scream for Life, said the commission would effectively allow more euthanasia.
"It is a very dangerous and tragic development," he said. "It means that doctors will have a freer hand as to whether to end the life of a child or not. It is a slippery slope."

Post Term Abortion.
The "kindly" sounding "seriously suffering" isn't too far from the "poor unfortunates" of the 1930s. But as it's too terrible to contemplate, the left will choose to ignore that it may be true that there really is a slippery slope.
Parents:"Yes,sometimes ten times a day"
Official:"Request granted"
Now babies who are "seriously depressed" may be granted the same rights to assisted suicide as Dutch adults?
Stop me if you heard this one before...Three doctors, a lawyer and an ethicist are sent to Hell...
AMERICAN LIBS: "Why can't we be more like Europe?"

It's tempting to think of the Dutch as pioneers in this Brave New World, but the USA has them beat hands down. In 1975 we settled the matter of killing living babies when we let Dr. Kenneth Edelin of Boston off the hook for manslaughter. Not only did Edelin get away with murdering a child who could and should have survived, he got numerous honors afterwards, including the chair of obstetrics/gynecology at Boston University. He is today one of the satanic saints in the pro-choice pantheon.
We are the ones who taught the Dutch that human life is worthwhile only if the human being is "wanted."
Important information, thank you.

Wackjobs, all. At least they won't procreate, though.
I say go to war against them and stop them.
Dear God.
IMHO, if they want this legal, then they should legalize it... Sounds like their taking their lead from the recent US, where we write laws to say one thing but enforce them in a different way... :-(
YIKES! Did I say "their" when I meant "they're"?!?!? AIEEE!!! Too much time online... :-(
And lest anyone think I was advocating the policies...I was simply saying that if they want to follow them, then they should have the decency to make it legal in the open, not just skirt the law.
Oh, well, thank God they have rules!
Now for the obligatory: (s/)
