Downfall of the Canadian Liberals **LIVE THREAD** Vote at 18:35 (6:35PM)

4hours 50 minutes Until the Liberals Fall!

Canada's Prime Minister, Paul Martin, faces a no-confidence motion in parliament which his minority Liberal government is widely tipped to lose.

It is expected that an election would then be called in early 2006.

Monday's no-confidence motion was introduced by three opposition parties last week, after Mr Martin rejected an ultimatum demanding a poll in February.

The motion claims the Liberal party - which Mr Martin has led since 2003 - no longer has the moral authority to lead.

The government has been dogged by allegations of irregularities over contracts awarded by a previous Liberal administration.

Mr Martin is not implicated in the scandal, but the opposition says his government is tainted and should be forced out of office.

We said we would have an election in March. I think that's when it should be Canadian PM Paul Martin

Tabled by Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper, the motion cites the corruption scandal.

For their part, the Liberals have accused the Conservatives of "false smears" and of trying to reverse decades of progress in Canada.

MPs are expected to vote at 1845 local time (2345 GMT).

Mr Martin's party holds 133 of the 308 seats in the House of Commons, while the three parties bringing the motion have a majority.

Christmas campaign

Mr Harper said his party would join forces with fellow opposition parties the New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois after Mr Martin's office rejected their demand for an early general election.

The Liberal party became vulnerable after it lost the support of the New Democrats earlier this month following a row over private health care spending.

Their backing had helped Mr Martin's government survive a no-confidence vote in May which he won by a single vote.

If the government falls on Monday, campaigning would take place over the Christmas and New Year holidays.

It would be the first winter campaign since the 1980 poll after Conservative Prime Minister Joe Clark's minority government fell in a confidence vote.

"We don't want to have a Christmas election. We said we would have an election in March. I think that's when it should be," Mr Martin insisted on Sunday.

He succeeded the long-serving prime minister - and his fellow Liberal Party rival - Jean Chretien in December 2003.

Mr Martin was returned to power in a minority government in general elections in June 2004.

What do you think the odds are that a Conservative / Bloc coalition could be formed?

I just got off the phone with a very conservative Canuck friend of mine (yes, still living there) and you'd think it was Christmas Eve and he was a 5-year old waiting for Santa!

Tonight's the night for Grits
Government expected to fall, accused of income-trust leak

Mike Blanchfield, with files from Allan Woods in Vancouver, CanWest News Service
Published: Monday, November 28, 2005
OTTAWA - The battle lines are firmly drawn for what will be a bitter winter election that will mirror the nasty and short-lived 38th Parliament, which is expected to fall tonight under the weight of a non-confidence vote brought on by a united opposition.

The Conservatives continued to hammer their core theme of corruption as they hurled allegations that Finance Minister Ralph Goodale's office leaked details of income-trust changes, just days after opposition leader Stephen Harper linked the Liberals to organized crime.

The Liberals, meanwhile, having learned from their early mistake of the past election campaign, continued to stress Prime Minister Paul Martin's record as a deficit-slaying former finance minister and the architect of Canada's G8-leading economic performance. But the Grits also took to the offensive yesterday -- accusing the NDP of imperilling public health by siding with the Conservatives in tonight's non-confidence motion.

All of that came before the campaigning is to begin tomorrow morning, when Mr. Martin is expected to visit Governor-General Michaelle Jean at Rideau Hall to serve official notice of the dissolution of the House of Commons after 17 months of acrimonious Liberal minority rule.

The question is what will happen in the upcoming election? Isn't it likely that the Liberals will again end up with the most votes, followed by the Conservatives, and they'll end up pretty much back where they are now?

For all those that want to see the true meaning of the phrase "liberal media", C-SPAN will be simulcasting the CBC's evening news live tonight at 9:00 pm EST. The CBC runs what is arguably the most biased news organization in the English-speaking world (and their French-speaking division is even worse), so it should be a laugh riot tonight. If we're lucky, we may even see some reporters crying on the air.
