EDITORIAL: Liberal spin on guns is a crime
It said everything voters need to know about Prime Minister Paul Martin and the Liberals.
Yesterday, in the dying hours of Parliament just before an election is forced on them Monday, they tabled a bill to, wait for it, get tough on gun crime.
Of course, it will die on the order paper as soon as Parliament is dissolved -- two days from now.
Among other things, the bill proposes increased mandatory minimum sentences for some gun crimes, an idea Justice Minister Irwin Cotler, who introduced the legislation, opposed until just a few weeks ago. Even so, this Liberal bill falls far short of much tougher sentencing provisions proposed by the Conservatives.
Besides, everyone knows the Liberals aren't serious about this. They just want to have something to wave at voters when they're accused on the campaign trail of being soft on crime -- particularly violent urban gun crime of the type that has plagued Toronto since the summer.
The Grits have been ignoring this issue for months, including Toronto Liberal MPs who have been missing in action as the bodies piled up and the wounded -- including innocent bystanders -- were rushed into emergency rooms.
Now, these same Liberals will say on the campaign trail they had just introduced a bill to address this very problem, but that the opposition parties brought the government down before they could act on it.
Right. This is just more tired, old Liberal politics-as-usual, whether Jean Chretien or now, Martin, is in charge.
Bribe us with our own money heading into an election.
Rush in last-minute bills that they have no intention of implementing, just so they can pretend to be something they're not. In this case, tough on gun crime.
Meanwhile, get ready for Martin to positively ooze concern about the gang and gun crisis in Toronto, at least during the campaign, while promising millions and millions of dollars for more social programs to combat it.
The Liberals have pulled stunts like this so many times heading into an election that it's become a national joke.
Just like this latest Liberal pledge to "get tough" on crime.
So I take it the national gun registry hasn't worked?
(/sarcasm)
Take that, lefties.
Between those two, I'd go .40; I think .45GAP will be an orphan cartridge in 10-15 years.
.40 or .45ACP, would be my recommendation.
.45 ACP. Way cheap ammo everywhere. Proven ballistics. .40 S&W has some nice guns, and if a gun I wanted could not be had in .45 I'd pick .40 over 9mm. But no way I'd pick it over .45 ACP. As for .45 GAP I don't see the point. You'll pay WAY more for ammo for a long long time. Get a gun you can afford to shoot, alot.
(Yeah, a .22 is almost manditory for this reason).
I love the way the Gov't and the media( in pre-election mode) have put a TOTAL spin on the fun situation here...
For a week now i've been seeing press conferences made up of mostly * Urbanites * trying to explain...again, that because of the jobless situation we have to understand what those * urban kids * go through...and why.
I live in Altantic Canada...where the poorest of the country are...can't find work?....IN TORONTO, VANCOUVER, MONTREAL?...give me a BIG PHOQUING BREAK!
Come to new-brunswick, we'll find ya work...if you want to that is...
oh btw...my point is...we dont go around shooting GANGMEMBERS AND GANGBANGERS here...we struggle to find work, and when we do find it we work hard at it( Fishing, Forestry etc...)
If we do get into a * spat *...Fists fly, one goes down...everyone goes home...no guns.
That's what I heard Martin say on a news report. Billions of wasted tax dollars forcing law abiding duck hunters to register their old Sears coey shotguns. Rush in last-minute bills that they have no intention of implementing, just so they can pretend to be something they're not. In this case, tough on gun crime.
16 billion dollars worth so far. Every minister seems to have a project they've been working hard on for the past 6 months that they are trying to inplement, and of course it will all be lost if they are defeated.
"Alberta, the Texas of Canada" bump
High praise indeed.

BTTT
The main reason I was considering the .45GAP is that it fits into the XD's smaller frame format, and can still have a 4" barrel, allowing for manageable concealed carry. 1911's have too many edges (boattails, hammers, etc) for my taste and like the XD's new safety features. 1911's capacity is at best 7+1, while the .45GAP is 9+1. .40S&W capacity is 12+1. 1911 pricing is also dramatically higher than the XD.
Thanks for the info. Freepers are good folks and helpful.
