Snubbed on pick for sheriff, black pols say

Concerned they were left in the dark about a potential successor to Cook County Sheriff Michael Sheahan, a group of black Democrats are suggesting the party endorse no candidate when it meets Monday.

The group of about three dozen black political leaders said Friday they were upset that Sheahan's handpicked candidate, former state Rep. Tom Dart, appeared to be in line for the Democratic Party's endorsement with little input from them. The snubbed Illinois politicians include U.S. Representatives Bobby Rush, Danny Davis and Jesse Jackson Jr., as well as several black aldermen, state lawmakers and suburban leaders.

At a breakfast meeting at a South Side eatery, the leaders said they would not support Dart when the Cook County Democratic Central Committee meets Monday. Rather, the group voted to ask for an "open primary,'' in which the party waits to make an endorsement until after the primary.

"The community would be best served if there was an open primary,'' Davis said. "We simply wanted to have more input into the selection of the candidate.''

On Friday, Rush, who called the meeting, said, "The sheriff's office is one of the most important offices in our county. We have to have input in terms of who is going to be our nominee.''

Members of the group, Black Elected Officials of Cook County, said they would begin interviewing candidates seeking their endorsement Tuesday. Dart said he planned to ask for that endorsement.

In Chicago, plantation politics doesn't change much. Just the faces.

I am still waiting for a headline that reads:

The Chicago black politicians who complained are right to complain about always being used as tokens by the liberal white Dims, but the particular blacks doing the complaining may have something to do with why a black candidate was not chosen from among black Demorats.

Note to Chicago Republicans: Chose a black American as your candidate for sheriff.

You're right! That headline could have been
written 40 years ago. And for one of the
Black Honchos to state the obvious is not only
inane, it's pathetic!

"Meeks accused Dem leaders of taking black
political support for granted."

Duh!

Wonder who Rush and gang would like to slate. Maybe Stanley Tookie Williams?
