Earthquake in China = Stir-Fry
little did you know that it was a low ball number.
Of course they know exactly how many buildings collapsed, and they know that only a few people died. This is the glory of Communism. EVERYTHING is under control, all is good for the masses. Everything is in order. Too bad WE can't do the same thing here or Katrina would never have happened. ;)
I had no idea.
I am not sure with something like that anyone could predict the numbers.
Depends on what you call a building. 8,000 reed huts fell down.
The prediction for a major disaster of sorts is supposed to be for Nov 29. I guess Noory will call this one "close enough."
Because saying 8,000 sounds a little made-up, so add a some numbers to that to make it sound more random.
Depends on the buildings. Straw huts could do it, precast concretes couldn't.
I'm glad Pres Bush got his visit there out of the way before Rove started experimenting with his latest earthquake model.
When they are made of clay and straw, those figures seem correct
Now, was the building in that picture collapsed or not? It's hard to tell if that's how they usually build them. It does look pretty safe in a quake, though. Might get konked on the head with a board, maybe.
I wonder if they build their skyscrapers with the same materials and in that 'primative' style that seems so popular these days. It would be a rough ride down from the top floor.
Shallow "quake."
Only 31,000 feet down (oil well depth ranges), and a vibrational measurement about as large as a nuke test.
Interesting coincidences.
Thousands of buildings collapse in China earthquake: official
Thousands of buildings collapsed after a strong earthquake rattled east China's Jiangxi province today morning, a local official said.
A total of 8,072 rooms were destroyed in Jiujiang county as a result of the quake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, said a county official by telephone.
In China, earthquake damage is measured not in buildings, but in rooms. A rural dwelling typically has two or three rooms.
Shockwaves could be felt as far away as Wuhan, a large industrial city on the Yangtze river more than 100 kms away, the sina.Com website reported.
The website carried photos reportedly taken in Wuhan early today, showing cracked walls and toppled mannequins inside shops.
Seems to be an odd place for an earthquake. It's well outside of where you would expect to see some activity.
Quake in east China kills twelve
BEIJING (Reuters) - An earthquake killed 12 people, injured nearly 400 and destroyed 8,500 homes in Jiangxi province in eastern China on Saturday morning, the official Xinhua agency reported.
Some 130,000 homes were damaged in the worst-hit Jiujiang and Ruicheng counties, while 420,000 people were evacuated to safer areas as emergency officials rushed tents to the zone to shelter the homeless.
The quake, which measured 5.7 on the Richter scale, hit at 8.49 am local time. It was followed around 20 minutes later by two aftershocks, Xinhua said.
By noon local time 6 people were reported dead in Jiujiang county, while 247 were injured, 8000 houses had collapsed and 29,000 were damaged, Xinhua said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site (www.earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/Quakes/usfwbf.htm) that the earthquake was "moderate" and of magnitude 5.5 at a depth of 10kms (6.2 miles).
Officials there said they were still assessing the extent of the quake, while a hotel receptionist who declined to give her name told Reuters that residents had been scared but rural areas were probably worst hit.
"You could hear windows vibrating, everyone ran out into the street. But I haven't heard of any buildings collapsing in the city, I think it was some kilometers away."
In Ruicheng, 6 people died, 130 were injured, 500 houses collapsed and 100,000 were damaged, Xinhua said.
The quake was also felt in neighboring Hunan, Hubei and Anhui provinces, state television reported, while in the industrial hub of Wuhan, people frightened by the tremors rushed into the street, residents said.

Not likely. My guess is someone got a new warhead design and decided to test it.
Wonder how well shielded it was - if there's reports of EMP damage in the area, then we'll *know* what it was, for sure.
Yup, and it's right about where you'd expect someone to put a test silo.
Earthquake in Central China Kills 11
BEIJING (AP) -- A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook part of central China on Saturday, killing at least 11 people, state media and an official said.
The official Xinhua News Agency said the quake happened at 8:49 a.m., with the epicenter in Ruichang, a city of 420,000 in Jiangxi province.
An official reached at the State Seismological Bureau who refused to give his name said 11 people were killed. He said it was not clear yet how many were injured.
"The earthquake this morning was quite scary," said a shopkeeper in Ruichang reached by telephone who would only give her surname Zhou. She said a few one- and two-story buildings collapsed and many taller ones showed cracks in their facades.
Many people in Ruichang were staying outside for fear of aftershocks. She said she felt a milder trembling of the earth around 1:00 p.m.
The United States National Earthquake Information Center reported the quake was magnitude 5.5.
