Bangkok (dpa) - The decapitated body of a local government official was found in southern Thailand Wednesday after he was murdered by suspected Islamic militants, police said.

The official, Anek Ngernmoon, 31, was reported missing by his relatives on Tuesday night.

Villagers found Anek's head in a fertilizer sack on the side of a road early Wednesday, said Colonel Thawan Nakarawong, superintendent of Nongjik police station in Pattani province, 730 kilometers south of Bangkok.

Anek's body was found along the same road about three kilometers away, Col. Thawan said.

"Anek didn't have any conflicts with other people," Thawan said. He said he believed Anek, whose brother is a local policemen, was murdered by Islamic militants operating in the area.

Also on Wednesday, a Thai policeman was shot and wounded in the the neighbouring province of Yala.

Police said the policeman was driving his car at 7 a.m. when two gunmen dressed as students opened fire. One bullet hit him in the side. There was no immediate report on the extent of his injuries.

The attacks were the latest in a string of violent incidents in Thailand's deep south that have claimed a total of 1,016 lives since January 2004, according to Thai police.

The incidents have included revenge killings, beheadings and police crackdowns on separatists who hope to carve out an independent Moslem country comprising Thailand's three southernmost, Moslem-majority provinces

Don't need Columbo to figure that out.

Is it Thailand where leaders are encouraging their populace to take up arms against these "peace-makers"? It's time for a smackdown.

The Thais are our friends and they are tough hombres. I have confidence they will deal with these savages properly.

Not to worry...as soon as they get a video on the Internet and
Al-Jazeera, the Islamic nutburgers will proudly claim responsibility.

If memory serves me from reading elsewhere, Anek collected garbage fees. A person can become awfully hopeless seeing that this murder is a "statement" by the Muslims. How completely vile can they get?

I don't.

Their latest attempt at trying to work things out with ones beheading people was to drop thousands of paper origami birds into the muslim villages of the south.

Muslims laugh at these types of moves.

Anyone else noticing a trend here?

I'd forgotten about the stunt with the origami birds. It was a very depressing and pathetic gesture, I thought; as you say, it probably did nothing but make the Muslims laugh and convince them that winning wouldn't be that hard after all.

-"Anek didn't have any conflicts with other people," Thawan said.-

It's not necessary to have conflicts when you're dealing with the Religion of Peace. You simply have to exist.

Anywhere there are Muslims, there are these problems. They can't get along with anybody. Hell, they can't even get along with other Muslims.
