Just north of Washington DC, southbound I-95 is closed because a gasoline tractor-trailer had a mechanical problem at the split for the Washington Beltway, and the driver managed to stop on the shoulder and bail out before the load caught fire. They are waiting for the stuff to burn up before bringing in the foam. People are recommending the BW parkway (but it is still backed up from an earlier crash), US 1 or US 29 as alternates, even taking I-97 from Baltimore to Annapolis and taking Rt. 50 in. They anticipate reopening the road in mid-afternoon after the cleanup and investigation. Northbound has finally been reopened, but there are backups.
Persons traveling from the far north to the far south should consider traveling down the Eastern Shore to either go over the Bay Bridge (US 50) and then hit US 301 towards Richmond, or even check out the Chesapeake Bridge-Tunnel if headed SE of I-95 (pricey, but if it makes sense for you...)
Rush hour and holiday traffic. This probably won't be back to normal until sometime tomorrow.
I heard on the radio that the driver was seen running away from the tanker with his pants around his ankles.
Why? Did the driver pick uo Monica Lewinsky hitch-hiking just before the incident?
Shouldn't effect her commute. She lives in enemy territory somewhere in NW DC.
I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo glad I am not traveling down I-95 through DC right now. I have been there and done that many, many times.
What--a--frickin--nightmare!
I bet the HOV lanes are going nuts too.
Are there HOV lanes on 95 north of the beltway? I haven't been that way in a long time.
No function junction strikes again. What a total nightmare.
Nope, no HOV on 95.
You see how my mind worked--I read the whole post and I knew precisely where the accident was, but my mind immediately went towards the HOV lanes going into and out of Northern Virginia.
Just goes to show how powerful the commute affected my psyche.
:^>
i live 20 miles N of that location, and I'll bet the traffic is backed up past where I sometimes use I-95, from MD 175 to MD 32. I think I'll take the back roads today.
right??? Oops! I mean the ride home....
Thanks. Whenever I hear I-95/beltway, my ears perk up.
The "get-away" day would be bad enough. I'm just glad I'm not working today and going nowhere until tomorrow.
I commute from Harford county to DC every day; but I took today off! Looks like I finally caught a break.
There's a german word for that feeling but I can never remember it.
Turn off the engine and smoke 'em if you got 'em.
Local news reports now indicate that two of the southbound lanes are reopening, but they still have to inspect the damage done to the other lanes. What this may do to the evening rush hour and turkey trot is anyone's guess.
