ULAN BATOR, Mongolia - In the wake of congressional unrest over his war policies, President Bush thanked Mongolia on Monday for standing with him in Iraq and compared the struggle against Islamic radicalism to this country's battle against communism.

Bush said Mongolia has stood with the United States as "brothers in the cause of freedom."

Bush's four-hour stop in Mongolia was the first ever by an American president. The brief visit was a reward for Mongolia's pursuit of democracy and support for the U.S. fight against terrorism.

If I remember correctly, the Mongols were very succesful in dealing with fanatic Muslims.

Genghis just had the magic touch. We could use him now.

In the wake of congressional unrest over his war policies

Actually Congress overwhelmingly rejected the immediate withdrawal idea floated by "Mr. Ethics" John Murtha.

The only unrest is in the liberal rank and file. Their representatives were just proven to be frauds.

Yeah, with their 140 troops.

Truly, in a case like this, it's the thought that counts. It was a courageous move by their government, all things considered. Just as it was with Afghanistan's offer to send a trivial (by our standards) donation for hurricane relief.

We should value the friendship of the people of Mongolia and Afghanistan, and keep in mind their very limited means.

no, he's remembering that the Mongols in the 13th century sacked Baghdad and decimated it -- they reduced it to rubble and it's NEVER recovered to it's earlier grandeur.

Hey. It's the thought that counts, right? What was that story about the poor woman who put only two copper coins in the collection box.....?

The Mongols massacred 800,000 of the city's inhabitants, including the Abbasid Caliph Al-Musta'sim, and destroyed large sections of the city.

It was really smart to compare "the struggle against Islamic radicalism to this country's battle against communism".
Especially if to keep in mind that the President of Mongolia - Nambaryn ENKHBAYAR (since 24 June 2005)- represents MPRP or Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (in essence Communists Party), which also holds 48% of seats in the Mongolian Parliament.
The next time he will thank F. Castro for battle against communism:)

I think that was one of his sons.

Genghis didn't torture his enemies - he just killed them - very effectively.

He DID send some envoys to a Central Asian city (Samarkand??) to try and work out a trade deal. The Muslim ruler had them nailed to the wall of his city.

Genghis, in his 60's led a huge Mongol army west, swang around in an immense arc, travelling over some high mountains, and enveloped the city from the western side. Then he destroyed it and killed everyone in it.

Nobody insulted his ambassadors and he always respected those of other nations.

He was a man's man and a soldiers' soldier.
