BAGHDAD, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Sunni insurgents in Iraq say they are ready to talk to the United States about ending the war, but U.S. officials doubt the offer is genuine, a report said.

Ayham Al Samarai -- who heads an organization called the Independent Iraqis Grouping and claims to represent the Iraqi resistance -- told the Middle East Newsline that seven insurgent groups were ready to talk with U.S. officials about ending fighting in Iraq.

Al Samarai said insurgents would not negotiate with Iraq's interim government.

"The people who are resisting are doing so honorably to protect this country," Al Samarai said. "The government must recognize them as legitimate representatives of the Iraqis."

U.S. officials told the independent news agency they doubted the offer to talk peace was genuine.
