Speculation Over Woodward Source Draws Denials (not Cheney, Bush,Rove,Tenet,Powell,Rice,Hadley...
Wall Street Journal ^ | 11/18/05 | JOHN D. MCKINNON and ANNE MARIE SQUEO

...That removes him [VP Cheney] as Mr. Woodward's source. Also ruled out are President Bush, who was interviewed by Mr. Woodward for his book, and Dan Bartlett, a senior adviser.

Douglas Feith, former undersecretary of defense for policy, said he didn't talk to Mr. Woodward about Mr. Wilson and his wife, as did Carl Ford Jr., former assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research. A spokesman for former CIA Director George Tenet and his former deputy, John McLaughlin, said neither provided that information to Mr. Woodward.

A person speaking on behalf of former Secretary of State Colin Powell said he didn't share that information with the reporter, and a National Security Council official eliminated Stephen Hadley, the head of the NSC, as a possibility. Spokesmen for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who was National Security Adviser at the time, and John Bolton, a former top State Department official and now U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said neither was Woodward's source.

Marc Grossman, a former undersecretary of state for political affairs known to have discussed Mr. Wilson's trip to Niger and his wife's CIA role with Mr. Libby, didn't respond to phone calls or an email seeking comment. A spokesman for Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove, who remains under investigation in this case, said his client didn't discuss Ms. Plame with Mr. Woodward.

One official among those who knew of Ms. Plame's identify is former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage. He was out of the country and hasn't responded to recent requests for comment on this subject.

The other two sources Mr. Fitzgerald asked Mr. Woodward about were Andrew Card, the White House chief of staff, and Mr. Libby. Mr. Woodward told Mr. Fitzgerald that he has no recollection that either man discussed Ms. Plame with him.

...also not Libby, Barlett, Feith, Ford or Bolton)

BUT, it may be Grossman or Armitage.

So for those keeping score, that is 12 who are off the "told Woodward" list and two maybes which drops the TBD's down to 279,999,986 (7 lower than yesterday).

I think this whole business is funny as hell. There has got to be at least one person who is sitting back laughing his arse off and enjoying every minute of it.

From "justoneminute"...

"So when did Mr. Armitage get back - in time for a "mid-June" meeting with Bob Woodward? It sure looks like it - these State Dept schedules for June 9 and 10 are clearly marked "Out of Country", but not so for June 12, 13, and 16. How about that...

In the WSJ version, Armitage at least has an excuse for not commenting. Marc Grossman has no game at all, and is operating from a secure remote location while pondering his next evasive tactic."

I notice on Drudge a link to a Joe Wilson story where he appears outraged that Bob Woodward would be criticizing the leak investigation while we know now that he is a part of it. He's demanding an investigation of Woodward. Me thinks Mr. Wilson is jumping for joy that someone else can be accused as to take the heat off of the reality that Joe's the real leaker.

Bart Simpson released the following statement regarding the Plame name revelation:

"I didn't do it. Nobody saw me do it. You can't prove anything."

Which is probably precisely why Woodward said this whole thing was much ado about nothing -- one of those bazillion and virtually faceless "current or former administration officials" told him about it, so it couldn't be that big a deal.

Exactly.

I've been wondering why nobody picked up on Wilson's blast of Woodward yesterday.

Here's the funny thing to me. After looking at the list of people who DID NOT reveal Plame's status, and assuming that they are on the list because they had to know she was CIA in order to be able to give such information, the question becomes, who the hell in Washington DIDN'T know Plame was CIA.

"I didn't do it. Nobody saw me do it. You can't prove anything."

I had a high school buddy who did a variation of this with the cops. He said; “I know who did it... but I'm not 'tellin!”

He thought it was creative at the time... but as they put him in the back of the cruiser...

I haven't been keeping up with this story, but for some reason that little Weasel came to mind. And I think I misspelled his name; it should be "Clarke."

One of Novaks hints was "no partisan gunslinger."

Clarke doesn't really fit that bill :)
