Psychotherapy for teens has fallen out of fashion DEPRESSION STUDY REVEALS LESS TALK, MORE MEDS
The San Jose Mercury News ^ | 11/16/2005 | Lisa M. Krieger

Posted on 11/16/2005 12:25:17 PM PST by Rio

Prescription drugs are replacing, rather than complementing, ``talk therapy'' in the treatment of depressed children and adolescents, according to a major new study by Stanford doctors.

The trend runs counter to guidelines that call for psychotherapy, which teaches problem-solving and examines negative thought patterns, as the first line of treatment for depressed youth. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry advises medication for only the most-serious forms of mental illness -- and then only in combination with psychotherapy.

The entire health care system has been hijacked by the FDA/Pharmaceutical complex.

The single most important thing most people could do to improve their own health is lose weight, but self-discipline does not come in a pill, and there is no way to make a profit from it.

Pill peddling, however, is another story.

I'm convinced that the single most important thing people can do to improve their health is to tell the truth.

Psychotherapy does work. The problem lies in the application. Too many psychologists, in this day and age, have bought into touchy-feely goobledegook that has no scientific basis- but because it fits their ideology that everyone has a right to feel good, they continue to do it. Classic behavior modification (not Clockwork Orange stuff, but using positive reinforcement) does work. Not only does it work, but it has been scientifically tested, and scientifically proven to work.

Are you implying that I am lying?

No not at all. I'm saying that deceitfulness has profound physiological consequences from the internal stress it creates in a body.

Exactly. A person can be a good liar but they can never really escape the truth. See what Bill Clinton looks like nowadays?

Time works, and psychotherapy is a way to kill time until you get over what's bothering you.

Can you just imagine if the poor kid is suicidal, and a latino ran away with his girlfriend?

Doesn't surprise me. Something is wrong. To High a number of boys are on Ritialin. I saw a 5 y/o today in clinic that someone had dignosed with bipolar disorder and had him on Depakote. Weird.

Lemme get this straight, we tell teens not to do drugs, but when they feel a little depressed we feed them what they want? Then, to make matters worse, if they get caught with these drugs at school we throw them in jail?

No wonder they can't think for themselves.

You barely have to take a single course in actual psychology to be able to prescribe meds, it's not weird its business,
