Insurgency mastermind stays step ahead of U.S.
LA Times ^ | November 16, 2005 | Josh Meyer and Mark Mazzetti

Despite the recent arrest of one of his would-be suicide bombers in Jordan and some top aides in Iraq, insurgency mastermind Abu Musab Zarqawi has eluded capture, U.S. authorities say, because his network has a much better intelligence-gathering operation than they do.

Zarqawi's organization has been particularly successful because it has repeatedly targeted Iraqi civilians who tried to aid the American effort to capture him, frightening off other potential informants, U.S. officials said Tuesday.

"There is a huge network of intelligence operatives over there who are watching our every move. And they are watching every time we recruit an Iraqi to come back and inform to us about where he has been and what he has seen," said one U.S. Justice Department counter-terrorism official, who is familiar with the campaign to track down Zarqawi. "And every time we have been able to do that, the person has ended up dead."

U.S. officials from four agencies involved in the hunt for Zarqawi said their failure was not for lack of effort.

At least two top-secret, multi-agency commando teams have been assigned solely to track Zarqawi and mobilize quickly to pursue him into the most unstable areas of Iraq where he is believed to be hiding, several U.S. officials familiar with the units said. One of them is called Task Force 626, which was established last year by the Pentagon.

There are also dozens of special forces commandos and military intelligence gatherers looking for him. The CIA has deployed dozens of case officers and analysts, the FBI has flown in special agents and bomb experts, and forensic money-trackers from the Treasury Department are trying to monitor the flow of illicit funds into and out of Iraq as a way of cornering Zarqawi and his top aides, those officials said in interviews.

Some BS here and some truth - But the underlying principle remains that Zarqawi has stayed alive / free because he continues to be able to operate within our OODA loop -

Shortening the circle of our OODA loop is key to killing him -

Of course, the simple notion of "luck" and/or "Mr. Murphy" play a role in this process as well. With regard to specific Ops that have happened.

Each week we are in Iraq our Intel and resources expand, thus making us more effective. And if these added strengths are implemented correctly our OODA loop should continue to shorten itself.

Call me cynical...bu...I've just got this feeling....that...Some rats in our nest (the U.S.A.) are tipping off/giving al-Zarqawi a leg up...somehow.

I mean, I fully Realize that he's Definitely got some outside/inside help from some Higher-Ups somewhere...

...but it would be very Horrendous if it was something like Oliver North's Mission Compromised, where several US politicians are directly aiding/abetting the Jordanian.

"Several times we have showed up at places where we know he was hours or days earlier. But the intelligence we get is never fresh enough," said the senior U.S. intelligence official.

If we could remove some of the bureaucracy (JAGs, and having 3 or 4 layers sign off on Ops) perhaps some of this Intel would be plenty fresh!

Zarquawi is either in Syria or Iran.

They operate by cell phone.

Seems simple.

The L.A. Slimes conveniently forgets that it was during the Clinton Administration that our intelligence services were gutted. I recall a bill sponsored by one Charles Schumer (Socialist-NY) requiring that only "high quality" people could be recruited as spies. Since the number of PhD candidates, members of the Country Club Board, and former aides to Mother Theresa generally do not have the inclination to do that kind of work, we had, in the past, used drug dealers, arms dealers, rum runners and assorted (sordid) ne'er do wells who were suited to the task. Since this offended Chuckie's sensibilities, we were left basically clueless in the run-up to 9/11, and remain severely hampered to this day.

For the libs to blame intelligence failures on Bush is the height of chutzpah. It's akin to poking out the bus driver's eyes and then complaining that he isn't staying between the white lines.

Not at all - Even if wannabe traitor's wanted to help Zarqawi there is no plausible way for them to do so (directly). In terms of keeping him aware of our tactical Ops on the ground -

So why isn't Zarqawi headlined as a terrorist mastermind? The same bunch of people doing the same thing in Amman are correctly labeled as terrorists. Why isn't Zarqawi?

Of course he does. I really feel Zarqawi is working to unload a major league hit within the Green Zone or within the new Iraqi parliment..

If he manages to pull off that coup, we're out of there and he wins.

Well...they are no longer top-secret are they?
I would like the NAMES of these U.S. officials.

Since they are keen on killing / intimidating those that are seen to be working with us, we should let slip a list of people we would like to see disappear and let Zarqawi think they are helping us.

Also, if the people that are seen to be helping us are such targets, we should watch some of them to see who is trying to intimidate them.

Sadly, this would not surprise me and it is actually quite plausible. Remember the human shields and other such sympathizers?

Remember a guy called Theodore J. Kaczynski

12 or 18 years to find. Very difficult to find. Hiding in the USA, stayed away from law enforcement. Every LEO in the Nation looking for him/her. Over 1 million LEO looking searching, and did not have to fight for thier live while searching.

How long, 10 years, 15 years, 20 years to capture??

Why, pray tell, would our people tell the press to tell Zarqawi that he's several steps ahead of us?

In public?

Do you folks actually believe what you're reading here?

Be Seeing You,

Chris

"For the libs to blame intelligence failures on Bush is the height of chutzpah."

I've noticed that the libs are getting bolder and bolder over the past couple years or so. They are saying some outrageous anti-American things they'd not have had the nerve to say before. Either they are losing their grip on America and are becoming desperate, or they feel the time is ripe to start a final, decisive battle against conservative America, (or both).

Chess games involve well-calculated moves and foresight. We'll catch him, and Osama, in due course. It's just a matter of waiting for that one mistake on which to capitalize.

Not cynical, smart. We know he's got the Iraqi police, military and Green Zone well-infiltrated. We use Iraqi interpreters everywhere we go. Therefore, Zarqawi practically knows our every move before we make it. It's dumb, dumb, dumb, imo.

I don't remember Patton and his men employing thousands and thousands of Krauts and Frenchmen as they advanced toward and through the Rhineland. Indeed, Iraq was pretty much of a cakewalk until we began employing Iraqis to help us. Our military does best when it's completely self-sufficient and not dependent on help from the natives. It's one of the things that's bothered the heck out of me since Korea.
